( ) 2 parallel stories that meet at the end of the book. In the present day, Vince has been badly burned in a car accident that killed his sister. His father says “You let your sister burn,” and Vince heads bush to work out whether this is true. In the 1940s, Pieter was a member of the German artillery captured and sent to a Western Australian Prison camp for German and Italian prisoners during WW2. Here he works as an orderly in the prison hospital and befriends the Australian doctor and his beautiful niece, Alice, much to the displeasure of one of the Australian guards Thomas. In present day, Vince and Pieter meet at the end of Pieter’s life and the new beginning of Vince’s. An excellent moving book – I cried my eyes out when Alice died. Where Pieter gets Gunter to eat after his leg is amputated. The chapter relating to the bushfire is also good. This 2 incidents do not give too much of the story away. nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione
