( ) This story was written originally in 1987 and originally released in 1990. The chapters are interwoven between Kirsten a student at a Northern University who is raped and severely injured, the other story is from a lady called Martha's point of view who travels to Whitley bay. Martha is on the hunt to track down and kill Kirsten's rapist, Martha is Kirsten in disguise a few years after her ordeal, the rapist has now moved onto killing his victims. Martha kills the wrong man then another one who was asking to many questions. Eventually she gets the right man. Good ok book this. Marth This is my first book by Peter Robinson. Really enjoyed it - I like murder mysteries written from the point of view of the killer, for a change - the psychology/motivation behind it, much like many of Ruth Rendell's standalone novels which focus on the how and why of the murder rather than the police trying to catch the killer. The quality of the writing in The First Cut was superb, which was what I liked best about this novel. Interesting characters and not too many of them to keep track of. However, I can see people not liking this novel because of the rather slow pace - the murderer doing a lot of standing around watching and thinking about the situation. May be too much focus on feelings and emotions for readers who prefer fast-paced action. I really liked it though and I am now going to start reading Robinson's Inspector Banks series from the beginning. As "Caedmon’s Song" opens, young Kirsten, a student just finishing her undergraduate studies at an unnamed university in the north of England, is savagely attacked while walking home through a park one night; left for dead, the only reason she survives is that her body is discovered by chance by a passing stranger and his dog. Meanwhile, researcher and would-be author Martha Browne travels to Whitby, looking for someone or something mysterious, which she hopes will be attainable; after all, she has prepared so diligently for this search…. This is a stand-alone psychological thriller by Peter Robinson, best known for his Detective Inspector Alan Banks series, set in Yorkshire; it is very dark, but quite compelling. I figured out a major plot point relatively early, but that didn’t detract from my enjoyment of the novel at all; in fact, it might have ratcheted up the suspense just that much more! Gruesome in parts, but if you don’t mind some disturbing imagery, well worth your time; recommended. A psychological puzzle-box following two stories: that of a woman who was brutally raped (in one time frame) and the other focused on a woman who is stalking men, bent on revenge. Too much focus on being a clever narrative coupled with a great deal of tourist information about Whitby and a fairly standard rape-revenge story that's not particularly insightful about rape. Prefer his Banks series and later stand-alones. nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione

On a balmy June night, Kirsten, a young university student, is strolling home through a silent moonlit park when she is viciously attacked. When she awakes in the hospital, she has no recollection of that brutal night. But then slowly, painfully, details reveal themselves - dreams of two figures, one white and one black, hovering over her; snatches of a strange and haunting song; the unfamiliar texture of a rough and deadly hand . . . In another part of the country, Martha Browne arrives in a Yorkshire seaside town, posing as an author doing research for a book. But her research is of a particularly macabre variety. Who is she hunting with such deadly determination? And why? The First Cut is a vivid and compelling psychological thriller, from the author of the critically acclaimed Inspector Banks series.
