When the Norwegian ambassador to Thailand is found dead in a Bangkok brothel, Inspector Harry Hole is dispatched from Oslo to help hush up the case. But once he arrives Harry discovers that this case is about much more than one random murder. There is something else, something more pervasive, scrabbling around behind the scenes. Or, put another way, for every cockroach you see in your hotel room, there are hundreds behind the walls. Surrounded by round-the-clock traffic noise, Harry wanders the streets of Bangkok lined with go-go bars, temples, opium dens, and tourist traps, trying to piece together the story of the ambassador's death even though no one asked him to, and no one wants him to, not even Harry himself.… (altro)

Violent and gruesome. Enjoyed some parts but others I wish I could un-read. ( )

This was a pretty good follow up and I did like it more than book one. There were still some things that really showed the age of this book but I'm excited to be getting more information about Harry's family and background.

The plot of this book is set in Bangkok and deals with Norwegians in Bangkok who are under suspicion for pedophilia. This was an interesting enough plot and I liked how the mystery ended up playing out. I was glad this didn't end up being a thing where Harry gets a different girlfriend in every book. That would have been super annoying so I'm glad it seems like it's going to be a more normal progression of his social life throughout these books. I don't have too much to say about the actual mystery. It was pretty standard fair, which is fine. I like how Nesbo does his reveals and I was satisfied with the ending. I'm excited to see how these plots go in later books that I know readers like more.

These books are so easy to from the library so I'm sure I'll read the next one soon. These are really nice books to read during busy times at school for some quick entertainment. ( )

Being a big fan of the Harry Hole series of books by Jo Nesbo I have been looking forward to reading the earlier books in the series since they were published in English. I have been warned by a few people that the first book, The Bat, isn't particularly good but that Cockroaches is a decent read. I always keep an eye out for any books in the series when I am searching second hand book shops and I was delighted to find a copy of Cockroaches for a very reasonable price of £1. It has been sitting on my bookshelf for a while and being set in Thailand it felt like a good time to read it.

The book starts with the discovery of a murdered Norwegian ambassador who is linked to the infamous sex trade in Thailand. Both the Norwegian and Thai authorities want to sort out the mess in the quietest way possible while at the same time being seen to be taking the matter seriously. To that end they decide to send a detective with experience working in a foreign country, Harry Hole. Harry isn't a in great place on a personal level, he is drinking too much and generally a pain in the ass to be around. Due to this, his superiors think that he will go to Thailand, enjoy the nightlife, and after a brief but ineffective investigation come home with the whole thing forgotten about.

Of course, this isn't how things work out and the case ends up being a very complex one with quite a few twists and turns. I thought that there were a few too many characters and on occasion I had to double check who was who to follow the story properly. Despite this, I really enjoyed the book and while it isn't quite up to the standard of some of the later books it is an enjoyable good read for sure. ( )

Deutliche Steigerung zum "Fledermausmann", aber noch nicht zu 100% an der Spitze angekommen. ( )

The second Harry Hole novel, finally published in the U.S. Like in The Bat, Harry is chosen to go abroad to investigate the politically compromising death of Norway's ambassador to Thailand -- a crime that the authorities are not sure they want solved. As always, Nesbo does a superb job hiding the culprit until the very end, with love, politics, sexual proclivities, and money involved. I think his writing has improved, with characters not as well developed as the later books. I liked Nesbo's balanced portrayal of Bangkok. ( )

Among Norwegians living in Thailand there is a rumour circulating that one of their ambassadors, who died as a result of a car accident in Bangkok, was actually murdered under extremely mysterious circumstances. There is no evidence to support this, but it makes for a good story.
No persons or events mentioned in this book should be confused with real persons or events. Reality is far too strange for that.

The traffic lights changed to green, and the roar from lorries, cars, motorbikes and tuk-Turks rose higher and higher until Dim could see the glass in Robinson's department store vibrating.
Det blev grönt och vrålet från bilarna, motorcyklarna och tuk-tuk-taxina steg och steg tills Dim kunde se hur rutorna till Robertson Department Store skakade.
