James McNeill Whistler (1834–1903) ranks among the greatest of modern etchers, and this compilation features the best of his work in this genre. Here are 149 outstanding examples of his etchings and drypoints, most in the original size, and all reproduced with exceptional quality. Appealing subjects include views of wharfs and bridges; street scenes from London, Amsterdam, and Venice; and portraits. Popular individual prints presented are "Black Lion Wharf," 'Rotherhithe," "Annie Haden," "Zaandam," "The Storm," "Little Venice," "The Palaces," "Portrait of Whistler," "The Village Sweet-Shop," "The Two Doorways," "St. James's Street," "Fanny Leyland," "Longshoremen," "Old Battersea Bridge," "Nocturne," and many others. The famous sets are also well represented: the complete French set, the Thames set, and the two Venice sets. Editor Maria Naylor has provided an insightful introduction and an explanatory note for each print, giving Kennedy catalog number, the particular state illustrated, the medium, the original dimensions (in the few cases where illustrations have been reduced), and the set to which the print belongs (where applicable). An excellent reference for those already acquainted with Whistler's etchings, this volume also makes a fine introduction. Non sono state trovate descrizioni di biblioteche |
