Bei racconti, alcuni bellissimi. Uno stile che può ormai dirsi classico, con personaggi moderni, mondani sì, ma con grandi capacità introspettive. Le donne dei suoi racconti hanno personalità, autonomia, e lasciano sempre gli uomini in secondo piano, figure più sbiadite e scialbe. Straordinario l'ultimo racconto (Autres temps...), con il finale beffardo nei confronti del personaggio maschile, e direi anche nei confronti del lettore che, se uomo, finisce coll'immedesimersi in Franklin Ide. Edith Wharton has often been seen as a sort of grande dame of American writing, as the wealthy aristocratic lady who supplemented her full social life by dipping into literature, and thus, as a gifted and lucky amateur. (Introduction)
