This is an excellent guide to the whales and other marine mammals of BC's coast. Like most of the Lone Pine nature guides that I have read, this book is well-written, well-illustrated, and far more than just a field guide. The species accounts contain much information on the animals' life history as well as their identification, and the lengthy introduction touches on whale biology, intelligence, mythology, and other interesting information. Ian Sheldon's beautiful illustrations are also excellent. I highly recommend this book to anyone with any interest in the whales and other marine mammals of this region. This beautiful full-color book features photos, illustrations and range maps, as well as notes on conservation status, quick ID, similar species and more. The rugged coasts of British Columbia and Alaska offer some of the best whale-watching opportunities in the world. Our fjords, straits and sounds are prime habitat for 38 species of marine mammals, and people come from all over for close-up views of Orcas, Gray Whales, Humpback Whales and Dall's Porpoises.
