"Set in the months following the apocalyptic events of Battle Ground, the seventeenth novel in the worldwide bestselling Dresden Files, this powerful new novella by Jim Butcher finds wizard and Winter Knight Harry Dresden mourning incalculable losses. The Law, though, in no way recounts the quiet period of reflection that Harry needs, no matter how much he deserves such. Taking on what at first seems to be a much smaller case than any he’s worked in years, the world’s only consulting wizard soon finds himself facing enemies far more powerful than the “invincibly stupid” pimp his client is meeting in court. And not the Unseelie Court or any of the other supernatural governing bodies Harry is used to dealing with, but a “real life” court of law in magic-wrecked Chicago. The pimp, it turns out, is a minion of an old enemy and erstwhile ally of Harry’s and is thus under potent magical protection. Through a series of literally explosive events, Harry must depend on the cooperation and help of friends, enemies, queens, demigods, and even apparently everyday denizens of Chicago, such as one lawyer who may be more than he seems, and another who is definitely more than he seems. Used to taking worldly and supernatural laws into his own hands, in this novella Harry’s potent abilities may not prove to be enough to right a simple wrong. Instead, he must depend on his canniness, his wits, and his friends if he wants to see justice done. The Law is the latest entry in Jim Butcher’s Hugo-nominated Dresden Files, which have been thrilling readers for over twenty years. The series of novels and other novellas describe a secret world behind our own, one that threatens reality at every turn, but which at every turn finds a staunch defender: Harry Dresden"--… (altro)

Nice short story, recollecting a lot of recent memories from the last book, so it would be an ideal story to read before diving into the next one. ( )

A nice insight into what is happening in Chicago six months after the Titan attack. Harry makes a bid for justice in the courts. ( )

A nice short read

What I always like about the Dresden Files is the mythology. It's always mostly accurate, and I learn something new every time I read a new book. This time it was Finnish mythology, which I had never even realized existed. I'm heading over to Wikipedia now to check it out! ( )

This novella is set after Battle Front and does have some spoilers so fair warning. Harry takes on a case of a tutoring company that is being shaken down for money due to a contract that the founder signed when she was running a different business out of that office location. The jerk doesn’t care that there isn’t a million dollars he will take her to court and ruin her since he is convinced that she is hiding the money. This was a nice contained short story and I wonder if we will be seeing more of some of the characters introduced in this book. ( )

2.5 stars

I was initially excited to hear Jim Butcher read his own work, and I did like hearing him as Harry. He and James Marsters sound a lot alike. The voices he did for the other characters weren’t as good, and the story was only O.K. I’m hoping the next full-length novel will be a winner. I’m dying to get back to Thomas’s story, but I’m less excited about where things seem to be moving with Harry’s love life. This novella didn’t really move the story forward in any major way and feels like optional reading. ( )
