I'd give this book a solid 4/5. I enjoyed the story in pieces, but overall it felt overdone. The main character just kept going back to the same troupe of self deprecation. The writing is done well and I did care about the characters. I did really appreciate the unapologetic and unflinching descriptions of bisexuality and prostitution.

Rode is a great coming-of-age, self discovery tale that is sure to reach the hearts/souls of many. ( )

I felt two ways about this book. It was a great story that not only enticed me to keep reading, but also exposes readers to possibly different cultures. The writing style was just a little off for me. It didn’t make it hard to read or follow, just too much detail or lost the heart of the story at times. Overall I thought it was a good book. ( )

I'm sad to say I did not enjoy this book. It is about a young man in his twenties who leaves his girlfriend and life in New Mexico and moves to San Francisco, looking for something that is missing. He has a self-destructive streak, and just keeps sinking lower and lower. I found it very depressing, much like the Thornbirds, although it did have a hopeful ending.
That said, The book was well written, with believable characters. It was just not a style I enjoy reading. ( )
