Set in a dystopic novel, Lucy and her young daughter live with a small group of people. The leader is determined to survive, and uses violence to control her group and displace others. When a storm floods their home, they are forced to leave and seek a different path.

This was an odd book. The world and its back-story did not feel well developed. The characters personalities and their actions did not always gel, making the book feel very discordant. Overall, not a book that I would re-read or recommend. ( )

Thought provoking, Chilling, Enthralling!

I personally would consider this novella what I call a slow burn, it was interesting & captivating to start and suddenly before you knew it bam it had become a full blown inferno!

I absolutely fell in love with the main characters of both Lucy & Irma I kind of picture them like the angel & devil sitting on your shoulders in my opinion both are necessary for survival in a post-apocalyptic world to a certain degree. I would never want to lose my humanity but my main purpose and role would be the safety of my children much as Lucy, therefore I would always try to first make some sort of contract and see if other people were friendly & or open to our groups joining but if they were not and they were a threat to my children or their safety you can bet your butt I'd gutt em like a fish! Anything for the lives of my children they are not only my children but the future of the human race!

This novella is very thought provoking as you can see from my last comments. It makes you wonder what you would & wouldn't be able to do to survive, to do to another human being, for the survival of your children, what kind of & how much abuse you could take for the safety of your children and so much more. Will our world truly end like this? Has this already begun? Earthquakes, tsunamis, wildfires, more frequent & intense drought, heat waves, storms, melting glaciers, rising sea levels & warming oceans as well as ocean acidification! Is it to late to save our planet as well as our wildlife?

This story was full of action, adventure and also character driven. However it could be considered a tad on the violent side and also be put in the "horror" category for certain aspects as well. Also something that I loved was T.C. Weber is very graphic in describing some scenes I could see perfectly in my mind what I was reading and it was brilliantly bloody! Bravo

I will be rating this a 5/5 star I loved the storyline, the characters were well developed, I couldn't wait to find out what happened next & was intrigued & impressed with how the story developed throughout I also loved the way the story ended.

I would like to thank LibraryThing, Early Reviewers, Solstice Publishing as well as T.C. Weber for the ARC of this very interesting and thought provoking novella. I wrote this review by choice and was under no obligation to do so, all thoughts & opinions are my own. ( )

Lovers of survival stories that are set in post-apocalyptic earth will dig this novella. This story is a cautionary tale of how we could end up if we continue to abuse the earth with reckless abandon. After global warming has taken its toll, the people who are left on earth only know a land that’s largely underwater, and the few places that are not are so hot during the day that people must seek shelter until nightfall. The prized cooler locations, like forests in the mountains, are extremely dangerous because of the other people who are competing for space and resources. Tribal societies have developed. Per the usual survival trope, you don’t know if you’ll run into enlightened folk who have answers about the world or straight up cannibals.

I really enjoyed the way the author portrayed the power dynamics in the group of survivors. And that power dynamic is what drives the narrative. One of the main members seeks to escape the group and its oppressive and violent matriarch, but encounters both moral and physical obstacles in the process that she couldn’t have anticipated. There is also a good amount of gnarly gore and death, so read at your own risk. However, horror lovers will love all of it.

This novella is a quick and easy read that presents some interesting ideas about how people could evolve on a planet that’s been completely ravaged by climate change. Some horror/survival tropes that I enjoyed in this story: bizzaro religions and practices that develop during times of adversity, cannibalism, gore, revenge. Highly recommend as long as you have a strong stomach for gore (I know I have said this several times, but it deserves multiple mentions).

Thank you so much to LibraryThing and the author for this ARC in exchange for an honest review. ( )

Reading this with the state of the world right now only made it more chilling. Please pay attention to the trigger warning - I had to put this down a few times to ground myself because you just get so wrapped up in the story it's easy to forget this is fiction and not a peek into a future that might be not too far off on the horizon. I loved Lucy - she's strong, smart, and hasn't lost her humanity despite the world falling apart around her and the worst of human cruelty surfacing and surrounding her. This might be a novella, but it really packs a punch, and the world building and characters are so well done. Hats off to Weber for giving me chills in 90+ degree weather! ( )
