Juvenile Fiction. Juvenile Literature. HTML:

This emotional and honest book explores a racist encounter from the perspective of a young Black boy, while offering a message of unconditional love and acceptance to soothe the pain of blind prejudice.

In this story based on the author's childhood, a young Black boy confronts his first experience of overt racism. In recounting the events to his grandfather, the young narrator asks: "How can she hate me when she doesn't know me?" Grandpa offers wisdom and encouragement to the child, reminding him that another person's hate does not change the fact that he is loved and that he matters. While offering an unflinching look at the emotional impact of the encounter, Tyler Merritt presents a message of love and acceptance that will resonate with young readers and offer a starting point for conversations about racial equality between parent or caregiver and child.… (altro)

In this story little Tyler is spending the summer at his Grandparents house. He meets a new friend named Jack. They have a great time until one day they do to show off all their freshly caught fish and Tyler learns that some people in the neighborhood do not want a black boy in their house. Jack goes in and leaves Tyler on the doorstep. Tyler is hurt but comforted by his grandfather who helps him process the hurt.

Beautiful pictures with expressive features help tell this story about a young boy who decides to continue to love himself. Despite the hurtful actions of the neighborhood, he decided to find his own door and open it for himself. ( )

Tyler Merritt’s first book, I Take My Coffee Black, remains one of the funniest, engaging, and vulnerable memoirs out there (not to mention Best Audiobook Ever in my mental list), where he writes with heart and hope about ”Tupac, musical theater, faith, and being Black in America.” Tyler is an incredible storyteller, and one of the many stories he shares is about his first experience of racism as a young boy while visiting relatives in Alabama. This story is captured beautifully in Tyler’s newest book, A Door Made For Me. The story explores the sting of rejection and the unfairness of racism with imagery of literal closed doors, as we journey with little Tyler in his rude racial awakening. In true Tyler fashion, the story doesn’t shy away from his truth; it ends with some tension, where there isn’t a neatly tied bow of reconciliation and complete acceptance by others — but this makes the message of true value and true identity (“you are loved”) and the call to keep doors open for others even more powerful. While this is a children’s book, Tyler’s message is for everyone. ( )

An important book for all families about love, inclusion, and being an anti-racist. Tyler always has beautiful ways of sharing his message even through his own sometimes painful stories and bringing beauty from ashes. ( )

A Door Made For Me touches upon a sensitive topic in a way that children will understand & learn from. Through rich prose and stunning illustrations Merritt’s retelling of a childhood experience, conveys acceptance, love, rejection, prejudice, racism, and redemption in a short but powerful story.

With an inspirational ending, readers are reminded they matter. What we say and what we do matters. And we have the privilege of helping to remind others that they matter too! A Door Made For Me offers an opportunity for deeper discussion and opens the door to talking about racism.
