A year has passed since the Dark Wizard Myrin attempted to take control of the Kingdom of Verania. Though the scars of the final battle remain, Veranians have come together in unity in order to rebuild. Good King Anthony sits on the throne once more, with Morgan of Shadows at his side. However, a king is not immortal. One day, Anthony will step down, paving the way for his son, Grand Prince Justin, to assume the throne. And Justin wants anything but. Unfortunately for him, he finds himself with bigger things to worry about than just becoming the ruler of a country. At the celebration of the might of Verania and its people, a delegation arrives, led by a man who calls himself a magician. This man represents the King of Yennbridge, who has come to claim what was promised to him years before: the hand of the firstborn son of the King and Queen of Verania. With his ridiculous friends at his side--Sam, Ryan, Kevin, Gary and Tiggy--Justin sets out to make the visiting king's life a living hell. Which, of course, backfires spectacularly, and when the dust settles, Justin finds his friends changed in ways he can't expect, leaving him standing alone. Except he's not as alone as he thinks, given the King of Yennbridge will do anything to prove he's worthy of the frozen heart of the Ice Prince. Prince Justin has finally met his match. Let the games begin.… (altro)

I waver between giving this 3 and 4 stars. It's honestly more of a 3.5 read than anything. It's the best in the series since book 1, primarily because it mostly focuses on Justin, who's a very fun POV character. There were moments I was grinning, and it's really nice to finally have a Justin book after so long. I know I probably expected too much from this, and tried to remind myself not to do that, because I was going to be let down, and I half succeeded. And I was kind of let down.

I am very happy that Justin gets a happy ending at long last. He deserves it. I liked seeing it. I like that so much of this book is about supporting Justin in so many ways, and giving Sam and other characters the support they need after dealing with so much trauma. The book surprised me in mostly interesting ways. I really liked the ace rep. And by and large I like Dylan. If nothing else, I like that Justin likes him.

That being said, this book could have been cut by 1/3 or even 1/2, and most of that cut could have been much of the parts concerning Sam, Gary, and Kevin repeating the same bad sex jokes that made books 2-4 nigh on unbearable. Heck, a good chunk of the introduction doesn't even really involve Justin. He's just... in the room while Sam and Gary are interacting, with Kevin occasionally adding commentary. When the story remembers to focus on its protagonist, though, it's pretty enjoyable.

The climax was... fine. In many ways this feels like a fandom response book, and I know a number of reviewers annoyed with one part of book 4 in particular will be very happy with the climax of this, while critics of a frustrating thing with book 2 in particular will happy-ish with the start. By the time the big reveal was revealed, I was so tired from the truly overly drawn out story that I was just resigned to it being a thing.

Another issue with this book is that I generally don't enjoy stories where the character obtains a child through some means and must care for them. I say generally, because last week I read a truly amazing story heavily involving that very premise, and it's one of the best things I've read in a while. I truly love it. The problem with this novel is that it involves all the worst parts of the trope, so it's incredibly unenjoyable. This culminates in that truly creepy and invasive date where the kids are listening in, aided and abetted by the adults. This series has always had an issue with respecting personal space, and it's worse than ever in this novel. And it just combines here in... bad ways.

Overall, I'm so happy to finally be able to read Justin's book. It's been a long road. There are great things that happen in this book, particularly if you've stuck through the whole series. That being said, I cannot say it was... that enjoyable a read. But if you've loved Sam, Gary, and Kevin in particular, you will love this book. ( )
