A delightfully witty and utterly charming novel that will have resonance for anyone today who has ever had, or contemplated...Having the Builders In. Dame Constance de Clair has a remarkable talent for getting what she wants. And, at this precise moment she wants to transform her beloved yet overly square castle, Vine Regis, by adding an extension. But for once all is not going according to her plans... Quite apart from the fact that her builders seem more intent on demolishing the existing castle than they do on building the extension, her son's wife-to-be, Susanna (a flirtatious minx with a penchant for drama), has arrived at Vine Regis eager to dislodge her as Lady of the Castle; Constance's son, Gervase, appears more interested in going hunting than getting to know his intended; everyone is in a state of mild hysteria as the French threaten to invade England; and to top it all off, there appears to be thievery afoot. Something is going to have to be done about it all before the estate begins to crumble but the question is what...?… (altro)

Not for sticklers for historical accuracy, great character development, or subtle plots but it does not take itself too seriously.

Though I have just noticed the same author has written a book about the history of cannibalism which might be a bit more interesting.. ( )

Medieval England. The castle of Vine Regis is in an uproar. Widow Dame Constance has arranged a lucrative marriage for her eldest son, Gervase, but is not so happy with the girl when she arrives. Due to the upcoming expansion of the family Constance has decided to expand her square castle and the builders are making life intolerable. Then King Edward III up and dies and Gervase is called to the court of the boy king Richard and may be on his way to war with the French. Numerous items have gone missing and accidents keep happening on the building site. What else could go wrong?
This is a light, witty book and a quick, fun read. The wide cast of characters was an interesting mix, they are each given memorable and charming traits. Historical, without too much historical description. A great book for a summer trip! ( )

Dame Constance de Clair was thirty-nine years old, clever, handsome, assured, and possessed of a strong and sometimes malicious sense of humour which she usually kept under strict control.
