Tells the story of a young girl taken from her home in Africa and sold to a plantation owner on St. John's in the West Indies. Slaves start to rebel against their masters and begin running away and forming a group. Angelica (Raisha-her real name) must decide what she wants to do, especially given that the leader of the run away group is the man she was going to marry in Africa, and she still wants to be with him. From the library for the states challenge. Raisha, the daughter of a African sub-chief is enslaved by a rival tribe and sold in to slavery. The ship's captain teaches her Dutch, and says above all else, smile - so she can get a house instead of field work when she's sold. She becomes the plantation owner's wife's body servant, on the island of St. John. In late 1733, the slaves revolt. When they are cornered, most commit suicide by leaping from the cliffs. But Angelica/Raisha is recaptured and is relocated to Martinique where she gives birth the a daughter by her African tribal husband (who was one of the revolt leaders). ( )
