Fiction. Literature. Historical Fiction. HTML:Three plucky women lift the spirits of home-front brides in wartime Britain, where clothes rationing leaves little opportunity for pomp or celebrationâ??even at weddingsâ??in this heartwarming novel based on true events, from the bestselling author of The Chilbury Ladiesâ?? Choir.

After renowned fashion designer Cressida Westcott loses both her home and her design house in the London Blitz, she has nowhere to go but the family manor house she fled decades ago. Praying that her niece and nephew will be more hospitable than her brother had been, she arrives with nothing but the clothes she stands in, at a loss as to how to rebuild her business while staying in a quaint country village.
Her niece, Violet Westcott, is thrilled that her famous aunt is coming to stayâ??the village has been interminably dull with all the men off fighting. But just as Cressida arrives, so does Violetâ??s conscription letter. It couldnâ??t have come at a worse time; how will she ever find a suitably aristocratic husband if she has to spend her days wearing a frumpy uniform and doing war work?
Meanwhile, the local vicarâ??s daughter, Grace Carlisle, is trying in vain to repair her motherâ??s gown, her only chance of a white wedding. When Cressida Westcott appears at the local Sewing Circle meeting, Grace asks for her helpâ??but Cressida has much more to teach the ladies than just simple sewing skills.
Before long, Cressidaâ??s spirit and ambition galvanizes the village group into action, and they find themselves mending wedding dresses not only for local brides, but for brides across the country. And as the women dedicate themselves to helping others celebrate love, they might even man

The story is told through alternating POV of Grace Carlisle, Cressida Westcott, and Violet Westcott. This historical fiction is based on true events during war time Britain. Cressida Westcott is a famous fashion designer who lost her business after the London Blitz. She returns to the family home hoping to be welcomed after leaving years ago to live her dream in London. She finds the family home in the hands of her niece, Violet Westcott and nephew, Hugh Westcott. The reality of life during WWII sets in as even the most affluent feel the effects. Grace Carlisle is the daughter of the local vicar who is hoping to repair her mother's wedding dress. During this era, many women were scaping together clothes or borrowing wedding dresses as supplies are hard to find. Cressida finds her place by gathering women and teaching them how to sew. it becomes their contribution to the war effort in a unique and meaningful way.

I received a complimentary ARC of this novel from NetGalley and Random House Publishing. My review of this book is voluntary and all unbiased opinions are my own. ( )

Oh, Ms. Ryan, you have done it again. I don't sew, and I am not that interested in needlework, so I wasn't sure I was going to enjoy this, but yes, I did. It is a romance through and through but with such an abundance of historic detail and nuance, it goes far beyond the usual trope.

Such a lovely writer, carrying the stories along and intertwining them in solid ways. Not a lot of surprises here, but never dull either. I am left with only one burning question:
How long before your next creation? :) ( )

The Wedding Dress Sewing Circle by Jennifer Ryan is a compelling triple love story set in a village outside London during World War II. The characters kept me engaged, wondering how they were going to react to each situation. History lovers and love story readers alike will appreciate this courageous trio of women and their journeys. The most valuable part of this book to me was the historical realities of WWII such as clothes rationing, bomb shelters, air raids, black out marshalls who patrolled the neighborhoods to make certain everyone was complying, and multinational fighting troops. It was a lovely idea and I truly respect those sewing circles who gathered to boost morale and mend or make clothing for the war effort. However, the story writing was quite simple and predictable. It reads like a Hallmark movie. ( )
