There are creatures lurking in our world. Obscure creatures long relegated to myth and legend. They have been sighted by a lucky-or unlucky-few, some have even been photographed, but their existence remains unproven and unrecognized by the scientific community. These creatures, long thought gone, have somehow survived; creatures from our nightmares haunting the dark places. They swim in our lakes and bays, they soar the night skies, they hunt in the woods. Some are from our past, and some from other worlds, and others that have always been with us-watching us, fearing us, hunting us. These are the cryptids, and Systema Paradoxa tells their tales. *** When a sudden trail of death and desolation sweeps through south and central Texas, elements of the case trigger an alert with a division of the FBI that tracks possible supernatural influence. Agent Chimalis Burton, a specialist in cryptids of the Americas, has a history of vanquishing such monstrous creatures. When she is assigned the case, she scrambles to find answers before the situation worsens. Evidence begins to suggest an evil that has festered for centuries; an evil that now rises to reclaim its power. An evil that rests in the soulful eyes of a wolf.… (altro)

This take on Native American cryptids fell flat for me. The reader is served everybody's pov (including the monsters') on a platter, so there is no suspense. The legend may be well researched, some of the details given aren't: The book title "De Bibliis Maledictiones" would actually translate to "Curses of the Bible". I especially did not care for the spin on real-life atrocities such as the El Mozote, El Calabozo and Santa Rita massacres, the perpetrators of which are here represented as having been urged on their crimes by the monsters, which seems like a cheap excuse and, to my mind, is not quite respectful towards the victims. It's fine but uninteresting. Two cryptids kickstart a murder mystery, but the reader knows the answer to the mystery, and meeting characters that predictably know pieces of the puzzle... is dull.

I made it to pg 54/98.

Then I read: "Perky breasts beneath a slim black top. Does she have a bra on? Probably not." I'm out. It's a very minor character, being observed by a bloodthirsty cryptid who likes making people kill other people. It serves us nothing to know her breast are "perky" and that she's not wearing a bra. We didn't need that info in order to figure out that she's the guy's sidepiece, either. So, knock it off.

I skimmed ahead a little but I'm giving up. It could be the right fit for someone who likes slightly corny narrator voice and dialogue in a detective novel (with no mystery). That's not me. ( )

Eyes of the Wolf , Tale Of l Cadejo by Robert E Waters

This was the first book of this series that I have read, but it is definitely a stand-alone story, complete in and of itself. Based upon Central American Folklore (which is related at the end of the story), this “continuation” completes the legend. The story takes you from the creation of the cadejo brothers by a cheated magician to their death over a century and a half later by an FBI special forces agent. The real story lies in the way the author takes you into the minds of the two brothers and their love/hate relationship which they both know must come to an end soon.
An easy, fast read, this story brings to light one of the less familiar kind of “monster” that haunt humanity’s dreams. ( )
