This Early Review Book consisted of an interesting mystery combined with horse lore and many comments on the changing social situation right after WWI when the large titled land owners found themselves under pressure to reduce their holdings. This in turn eliminated the duties of their servants as well as changed the position of women in society so they had more opportunities for advancement and power. A good read. Set in rural England after WWI, the characters are well developed and the plot interesting. As with most villages, this one is full of secrets that lead to murder. I felt like this could be the first book in a series and I would look forward to reading others. I really enjoyed this one.Questa recensione è stata scritta per Recensori in anteprima di LibraryThing. I enjoyed this much more than I thought I would! It is a rich and very detailed historical mystery set in a socially interesting period of English history. Extremely well researched, with lots of details about horses and the social setting. I look forward to reading more by this author. Questa recensione è stata scritta per Recensori in anteprima di LibraryThing. All Men Glad and Wise is set in post WW1 England. The story revolves around Harry Green, a girl raised as a boy, who has a way with horses. Harry finds a dead body and many strange things happen after the inquest. I figured out who the murderer was, but I did not see the final plot twist ahead of time. The story is full of suspense and does a good job of portraying changing society after the war.nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione
"Willingford Hall stable lad Harry Green is about to make a discovery even more unlikely than a corpse. With the estate near bankruptcy and the rise of automobiles fast replacing horse travel, Harry, a young woman passing as a lad, will soon be out of a job. Facing the knowledge she has no skills in the service positions open to women, Harry resolves to discover who murdered the steward, thus becoming a woman who can determine her own future. But as her investigation proceeds, a second murder demonstrates just how dangerous her knowledge is. Soon, no matter where she rides, she finds that somebody is following her. Part coming-of-age and part cozy mystery, All Men Glad and Wise confronts a time of tremendous social change: the inequities of service jobs, the quandaries of grooms as technology advances, and the patriarchal assumptions that exclude women from both valued work and riding astride. Harry, like horsemanship, and like England, is on the cusp of a world looking forward."-- Non sono state trovate descrizioni di biblioteche |

Laura Stevenson has given me a book that affords an escape from our current horrors, a cozy type mystery/coming of age, that also recalled all the years I worked with horses in my youth. Thank you for the escape and the reminder that the world can be many things, but most of all, what we make of it. ( )
