"Born in 1806 in San Antonio de Bexar on the northern frontier of New Spain, Juan Nepomuceno Seguin was destined to live under the flags of Spain, Mexico, the Republic of Texas, Mexico for a second time, the United States, the Confederacy, the United States for a second time, and finally Mexico again to the end of his long and eventful life. As a captain in the Army of Texas in the revolt against Mexican dictator Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, Juan Seguin fought for a democratic Texas as a state in the Mexican Republic. His Anglo-Texan allies, however, proclaimed a republic ; and the Tejano captain, promoted to Lt. Colonel after his performance at the battle of San Jacinto, became a target of late comers to Texas from the United States who resented Seguin's status as Mayor of San Antonio. Falsely accused of collaborating with the Mexican government in its effort to retake Texas, Seguin fled to Mexico where he was arrested and forced to fight under Santa Anna against his former comrades in arms in an effort to retake Texas in 1842 and during the Mexican-American war. After the fighting was over, Seguin returned to Texas to restore his reputation and clear his name. This is the story of that questy." -- from inside book cover.
