Dumplin' meets Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda in this heartfelt and funny contemporary romance inspired by Dollywood, about two boys who fall in love against the backdrop of a country music-themed amusement park, from debut author Brian D. Kennedy. Perfect for fans of Erin Hahn, Phil Stamper, and David Levithan. Emmett Maguire wants to be country music's biggest gay superstar--a far reach when you're seventeen and living in Illinois. But for now, he's happy to do the next best thing: Stay with his aunt in Jackson Hollow, Tennessee, for the summer and perform at the amusement park owned by his idol, country legend Wanda Jean Stubbs. Luke Barnes hates country music. As the grandson of Verna Rose, the disgraced singer who had a famous falling out with Wanda Jean, Luke knows how much pain country music has brought his family. But when his mom's medical bills start piling up, he takes a job at the last place he wants: a restaurant at Wanda World. Neither boy is looking for romance, but sparks fly when they meet--and soon they're inseparable. Until a long-lost secret about Verna and Wanda comes to light, threatening to unravel everything. Will Emmett and Luke be able get past the truths they discover...or will their relationship go down in history as just another Sad Country Love Song? … (altro)

This is a Young Adult novel and it made me wonder what the difference is between Young Adult and Juvenile. The first is 12-18, the latter is 6-18. Wow, I would have thought the lower limits would not be so low! A 12 year old is a Young Adult!?

A juvenile is a young person - fair enough. It's a shame that, at the same time, juvenile as an adjective means childish. So to me, a juvenile is a child, up to and including 12 perhaps - not an 18 year old. Legally, a child is anyone UNDER 18. For some reason, 18 is called the age of majority.

These boys are 17, Emmett and Luke. We meet them in their holidays in the summer before their last year at school. What an amazing age. They seem more on the cusp of adulthood than an 18-year old, who is an adult. What an anxious and uncertain time, with so much to navigate as they take more responsibility for themselves - and work out who that self is in the first place!

NB: Wikipedia: The age of majority is the threshold of legal adulthood as recognized or declared in law. It is the moment when a person ceases to be considered a minor and assumes legal control over their person, actions, and decisions, thus terminating the control and legal responsibilities of their parents or guardian over them. Most countries set the age of majority at 18, but some jurisdictions have a higher age and others lower. The word majority here refers to having greater years and being of full age as opposed to minority, the state of being a minor.

Mark Sanderlin narrates for Luke, and Andrew Gibson for Emmett. ( )

Country cute y'all!

A pretty sweet YA LGBTQIA coming out romance. There was a nice level of predictability in there which made it a comfortable love story with a Dolly Parton energy about it. Emmett and Luke are both working hard to be true to themselves but sometimes that isn't what those around them want or need. They each have to 'walk the line' in order to figure out what will make them happy. I enjoyed the romance despite it being pretty 'insta'. This would make a nice addition to a high school library with some minor content warnings. It was such an easy listen and before I knew it I'd almost finished it in one sitting!

CW: off page sexual content, anti-LGBTQIA sentiments but not abuse e.g. what is wrong in the eyes of god type stuff, unwell mother ( )

How could I resist a sweet boy meets boy romance set in Wanda World, the Tennessee amusement park owned by country music star Wanda Jean Stubbs? Young love was the headliner in this story but the mystery behind Wanda Jean – think Dolly Parton in an orange bouffant wig – and the authorship of the songs that made her famous added a nice touch of suspense. And I loved all the country music references; even my favorite, Gillian Welch, got a shout‑out. All this needs is a sequel, maybe the title can be A Little Bit More? Or not, but at any rate it needs one. ( )

A fun and heartfelt romance between Emmett, who wants to be the biggest gay country music star, and Luke, a guy who worries about coming out to his family and friends in a conservative, small town. The two must navigate misunderstandings and family and town secrets to achieve their happily ever after. Highly recommended! ( )
