Bound to the queen of Chandela by a forbidden soul bond that saved her when she was a child, Katyani has never fallen short of what's expected of herâ??becoming the best guardswoman the Garuda has ever seen and an advisor to the crown prince when he ascends to the throne. But when the latest assassination attempt against the royals leaves them with a faceless body and no leads to the perpetrator, Katyani is unwillingly shipped off to guard the Chandela princes in Acharya Mahavir's esteemed monastic school in Nandovana, a forest where monsters have roamed unchecked for generations.
Katyani wants nothing more than to return to her duties, especially when the Acharya starts asking questions about her past. The only upside of her stay are her run-ins with Daksh, the Acharya's son, who can't stop going on about the rules and whose gaze makes her feel like he can see into her soul. But when Katyani and the princes are hurriedly summoned back to Chandela before their training is complete, tragedy strikes and Katyani is torn from the only life she has ever known. Alone and betrayed in a land infested with monsters, Katyani must find the answers to her past so she can save what she loves and forge her own destiny.

This has been my most anticipated read of the year because I fell in love with Rati Mehrotra’s writing with the Asiana duology and couldn’t wait for more. This story was perfectly epic, reminding me a good bit of another favorite story of mine based on an epic, Kaikeyi. The lore was wonderfully explored with the different monsters that exist and how the governments and powers worked. The characters were well developed and interesting, even the side characters. There wasn’t really any character talked about that I didn’t have interest in, honestly, and that’s saying something. There’s romance, intrigue, battle, revenge, betrayal, tears, laughter, spirit, fun, and more in this novel and it was just as good as I’d hoped, if not better. ( )

I miss a good YA book. There's so many good books to read and I remember a time WAAAAAY back when I only read YA (the good ole days... before I realized how many books there really were).

Then I stumbled upon Night of the Raven, Dawn of the Dove by Rati Mehrotra and I remembered why I loved YA so much. Fantasy, magic, political thrills, family mysteries, crushes on boys, and one girl being the key to it all... Yes, I'm back in the YA world.

Rati Mehrotra has written a fast paced, easy to binge YA book that will leave you breathless. Katyani is relatable and such a strong female lead. She has her moments, but she's dealing with a lot so cut her a little slack. I absolutely loved this book and I'll be keeping an eye out for more books by Rati. Read this book while it's still a hidden gem, because you never know when it'll go big... Or help me make it go big. This book deserves all the love.

Five out of five stars.

I received this book for free through Goodreads First Reads. ( )

Started out a bit slow but once the story got going, it was one hell of a ride. The characterization is excellent, the pacing is almost perfect and the world-building wonderful. I laughed, I cried, I reveled.

A big pile of gratitude to Wednesday Books for the free advance copy, and I trust they will be putting a map in the final published version. ( )

Night of the Raven, Dawn of the Dove by Rati Mehrotra is another novel that surprised me. I wasn’t certain what to expect but quickly found myself drawn into its lush descriptions and an intriguing mystery involving royalty and monsters. Katyani has quite an exciting past and present, and I adore her fierceness. She is a woman who knows her worth and will not let anyone or anything tell her she’s wrong. As the story unfolds, we learn the depths to which people will go to obtain or maintain power, which is ugly. Katyani’s world implodes, and we can only watch and wait to see how she handles it and what happens next.

Night of the Raven, Dawn of the Dove is the type of novel that draws you in so entirely that you lose track of time. The setting is almost magical in its luxury while being exotic at the same time. The characters are intense, while the magic feels almost subtle but is anything but that. I thoroughly enjoyed my time with Katyani and would love to explore more of her world. This is another stand-alone, but in this instance, I would love it if Ms. Mahrotra would set another novel in this world of hers because I want more. ( )

Night of the Raven, Dawn of the Dove is a wonderfully crafted story. Anyone who loves upper-YA Fantasy with political intrigue should give it a go. It's fast-paced, brimming with action, and has an enemies-to-lovers subplot that any romance fan will enjoy!

Katyani is a fantastic FMC...she's strong and independent. She goes through a lot in this book and still doesn't waver. I absolutely adored her.
There are a lot of characters to keep track of and I would've liked a little more depth to some...they weren't as fleshed out as they could be and I felt like their actions weren't super clear, but perhaps that'll change if there's another book (I would love another book ;)).

It was actually difficult to give this book only four stars as I enjoyed it so, so much, but the pacing was a bit too quick. The plot moves very fast and I think that ended up hurting the story. I would've preferred to linger a bit before moving onto the next scene. This book could've easily been longer.

All in all, a wonderful book and I genuinely hope there is more written!

Thank you Wednesday Books for the ARC to read and honestly review! ( )
