William J. Federer’s America’s God and Country is an encyclopedia of quotations. Many of these quotations are short, but some entries are pages long. This book is an attempt to highlight America’s heritage. So there are profound quotes of the Founding Fathers e.g., President George Washington, President Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin. Included are explorers like Christopher Columbus, who discovered the New World, and Sir Walter Raleigh, who settled in Virginia. There are women e.g., Queen Elizabeth of England, who defeated the Spanish Armada and Harriet Beecher Stowe, the abolitionist, who wrote Uncle Tom’s Cabin. Major colleges and universities are represented e.g., Harvard, Yale, William and Mary, and Rutgers. The majority of these institutions were founded by deeply religious men who were ministers.
This encyclopedia included quotations from significant court cases in America, the constitution of the United States, and important laws of many states. African Americans are accounted for with names e.g., George Washington Carver’s experiments with peanuts, civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., and educator and former slave Booker T, Washington. Civil War military personnel e.g., Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson, Robert E. Lee, and Ulysses S. Grant were mentioned. Although this book lacks an introduction it was clear that Federer wished to highlight the important role that God has played in the destiny of America. ( )

I can't keep my hands off of this book. Very handy to have around especially for research. As the previous reviewer stated it is sorted by source. But there is a Topical Index in the back, so you can search subjects. ( )

An awesome collection of quotations from some of America'a greatest leaders of the past. Some will find it less user friendly due to the fact that it is sorted be source and not by subject. Of course if your looking for something that a particular person said you will find it to be a very efficient choice. ( )
