"A true crime blogger gets more than she bargained for while interviewing the woman acquitted of two cold case slayings in this chilling new novel from the New York Times bestselling author of The Sun Down Motel. In 1977, Claire Lake, Oregon, was shaken by the Lady Killer Murders: Two men, seemingly randomly, were murdered with the same gun, with strange notes left behind. Beth Greer was the perfect suspect-a rich, eccentric twenty-three-year-old woman, seen fleeing one of the crimes. But she was acquitted, and she retreated to the isolation of her mansion. Oregon, 2017. Shea Collins is a receptionist, but by night, she runs a true crime website, the Book of Cold Cases-a passion fueled by the attempted abduction she escaped as a child. When she meets Beth by chance, Shea asks her for an interview. To Shea's surprise, Beth says yes. They meet regularly at Beth's mansion, though Shea is never comfortable there. Items move when she's not looking, and she could swear she's seen a small girl outside the window. The allure of learning the truth about the case from the smart, charming Beth is too much to resist, but even as they grow closer, Shea senses something isn't right. Is she making friends with a manipulative murderer, or are there other dangers lurking in the darkness of the Greer house?"--… (altro)

A murder mystery and ghost story wrapped in one book! The characters are interesting. Shea is a resilient survivor of childhood abduction. Beth is an acquitted suspect in a serial murder case, stuck in the past, with unresolved family conflict that literally haunts her. The story held my interest. If Beth did not commit the "Lady Killer Murders" who did? What exactly is going on in Greer Mansion?
One flaw is the writing, which was often awkward and sometimes clichéd.
Still, a good read. ( )

Shea is a true crime blogger. A harrowing incident when she was a child has influenced her life and her ambitions. Her current focus is on a cold case where the perpetrator was tagged with the name, the Lady Killer. Now more than forty years have passed since the senseless killing of two random men, but the cold Lady Killer case is about to heat up. By chance, Shea meets Beth, the woman who was tied to that case, and maybe more, and Shea is determined to find out all she can about the murders from the woman who seldom shares secrets. But these two very strong and private women are bound together like magnets, most of the time, and if anyone can break through Beth’s defenses, it is Shea. This story is gripping from the start. Shea’s dogged pursuit of the truth defines her, as does Beth’s longing for her mother’s love and acceptance. The story builds suspense as it unfolds, and the ghostly paranormal aspect is well done and not over done. If you like suspense with ghostly overtones, then this bone-chilling story is one you’ll enjoy. ( )

Mixing crime stories with ghosts? Nope. Could have been 3 stars without that silly inclusion. ( )

I thought this was a deliciously creepy story BUT you must be ready to suspend disbelief. ( )

True crime podcasts are popular themes in thrillers these days, and in this book we have a cold cases blogger named Shea who lands an interview with Beth, the woman acquitted of murdering two men 40 years earlier. Shea has been long obsessed with this case, partly because it happened in her home town of Claire Lake, Oregon. If Beth didn't kill those men, then who did? Beth has been reclusive for decades, hiding alone in her family's creepy mansion, and also hiding the truth.

Usually I'm a huge fan of Simone St. James' ghostly elements, but this time the paranormal didn't fit particularly well. THE BOOK OF COLD CASES was more of a dysfunctional family drama with a murder mystery mixed in, and unfortunately the mystery gets solved too quickly! While I enjoyed the premise and characters, I thought the story moved slowly overall, and I kind of questioned the point of including the woo-woo. Liked this one, but didn't love it.

Disclosure: I received a copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. ( )
