An NPR Book of the Day

Picking up where the New York Times bestselling Front Row at the Trump Show left off, this is the explosive look at the aftermath of the electionâ??and the events that followed Donald Trumpâ??s leaving the White Houseâ??from ABC News' chief Washington correspondent.

Nobody is in a better position to tell the story of the shocking final chapter of the Trump show than Jonathan Karl.  As the reporter who has known Donald Trump longer than any other White House correspondent, Karl told the story of Trumpâ??s rise in the New York Times bestseller Front Row at the Trump Show. Now he tells the story of Trumpâ??s downfall, complete with riveting behind-the-scenes accounts of some of the darkest days in the history of the American presidency and packed with original reporting and on-the-record interviews with central figures in this drama who are telling their stories for the first time.

This is a definitive account of what was really going on during the final weeks and months of the Trump presidency and what it means for the future of the Republican Party, by a reporter who was there for it all. He has been taunted, praised, and vilified by Donald Trump, and now Jonathan Karl finds himself in a singular position to del

This is probably in my top 3 books of all-time. It really is incredeible and his reporting is thorough and shocking. I didn't believe I would learn anything new by reading this but I just wanted to get a refresher on the day and the days leading up to Jan. 6th. Well I couldn't have been more wrong. There are more than several times in the book that it was my first time hearing, and some rather shocking stuff. You can tell his sources are legit by the way he tell it and so many of them going on the record. I didn't read the first book, Front Row At The Trump Show even though I wanted to. But now I'm going to go back and read it because it would be a good way to remember all of that foolishness, cause there was so much of it. J. Karl is an amazing writer and journalist. Trump told him he "didn't think he was going to make it" but I think he's way past that. ( )

Karl writes in such a readable fashion and although I felt as though I knew most of what he was going to be describing, he added lots of details to the picture of what anyone paying attention was observing. The problem is that the people who should be reading this book....with not touch it, or believe it if they DID start to read it and that's where we are in this country. Yes, it should be required reading for all of the Republican congressional people. Why do people think this person who is no longer in office should ever have been President or should possibly have the chance of becoming President again??? There is no end to the descriptive words that can be applied to Trump in an effort to explain him....allllll negative. Great book! ( )

I'm not sure why I keep reading these books about the Trump presidency - there's really nothing new in any of them. Still, this one is a comprehensive look at Trump's final year in office, culminating, of course, with the assault on the Capitol on January 6. It's eminently readable and should drive home the truth that if Trump ever gets into the White House again, our country will be in grave danger (again). ( )

Betrayal concludes with words of warning. Karl rightly contends that Trump's "betrayal" of American democracy highlighted "just how vulnerable" the system is. "The continued survival of our republic," he writes, "may depend, in part, on the willingness of those who promoted Trump's lies and those who remained silent to acknowledge they were wrong."
