This will be the same review for issues 2-6, as I'm taking this 6-issue series as a whole.

Finally, finally, Joe Hill delivers on his own Hill House-branded comic. While A Basket Full of Heads wasn't bad, it didn't quite payoff the way I expected it to. And, with the exception of the fantastic The Low Low Woods series, none of the others paid off very much either. But this one, with some minor quibbles about pacing/info dumps/what should have been left out, was excellent.

And Stuart Immomen's art was top notch, as usual, really shining in the last couple of issues, but strong throughout.

As for the story...a great setup, with an intriguing mystery, enough time given to introduce the main players adequately, and we're off to Russia. The series only bogged down in two areas.

The first was all that math. Now...I'm a geek, and I love math. So, initially, I was actually digging the whole Pi thing, and excited about where and how Hill and Immonen would run with it.

Alas, they didn't. While interesting, it actually had no place in the story. It literally could have been removed, the series shortened by an issue, and the story would have completely held up.

The second was upon the discovery of the other crew. Again, some information was required, but the conversation between normal human beings and the...shall we say supernatural ones? ...went on and on and on far past the point of credulity. It was simply not believable that they would continue to chat up eyeless monsters as they did.

But thankfully, both situations persisted for only a few pages each (though far more pages than should have been allotted). The rest of the story? Yeah, ignore those two bits, and this was a crack-a-lackin' good story.

In the end, I think I have to go with my original prediction when I read the first issue of this when I said this is the best of the Hill House series. Hands down. ( )
