Doc Ford has his hands full in this mystery with missing Native American artifacts, a hurricane, and a psychotic wealthy businessman. It seemed to drag a but in the middle, but it's still an enjoyable mystery. ( )

This is one of Randy Wayne White’s books from the transitional period between sharp, lively stories and lusterless, slow death stories. This one has some life. And it’s a good Florida story, with all of the elements that make it one: water, sun, boats, weather both extreme and sublime, greed, corrupt and insane politicians and their wealthy fathers; general mayhem.

White, long before he tried writing the same book every year and became a restauranteur, was a master of the Gulf Coast updated John D. McDonald story. He has strong characters in Doc Ford and his friend Tomlinson and knows what makes Florida special and also what makes it so craven. At his best White can make you love the state and abhor those who ruin it in the name of greed. This is actually one of those books. ( )

This was a not the best Doc Ford story. There wasn't much to hold my interest or keep me turning pages as in the other previous Randy Wayne White books I've read, however, I will read another one or two for comparisons sake. ( )

Each book from this series is a different adventure, which I'm sure is what Randy Wayne White is shooting for. It makes each one a stand-alone even if it is a series...some start out slowly and build up to high tempo and others start off with a big bang and keep it going. This is one of those big bang start and kept on banging at the cranium.
In among the action is the first time Doc Ford has some leftover fish baked up by Tomlinson and Tomlinson used his creative side to add some 'shrooms...the magic kind....and Ford has himself a little unplanned 'trip'. Tomlinson assures him that he is there for the duration to help him through the journey. This was a superb break in the thrill mode.
I think Ron McLarty is my favorite of the narrators for this series. He gives my favorite character, Tomlinson, the best voice. Kind of a stoner dude hippie feller and I love him so.
Four stoner 'shroom action in the middle beans..... ( )
