"When we meet August "Gus" Molloy on the opening pages of CHEVY IN THE HOLE he's just overdosed at the Detroit restaurant where he works. Shortly after, he packs it in and returns home to his family for another shot at sobriety. There, he meets and falls quickly in love with Monae Livingston, an urban farmer trying to coax a tenuous rebirth from the damaged land. As Gus and Monae begin dreaming up an oasis together in Flint, the city's water supply is being quietly poisoned. Woven throughout their story are the stories of Gus's and Monae's families-Gus's white and Monae's Black-members of which have had their own triumphs and devastating setbacks trying to survive and thrive in their troubled city. In 1937, Gus's great-grandmother runs supplies to the strikers at Chevrolet while her husband, a luckless salesman, daydreams of riches. Meanwhile, Monae's grandmother, Esther Williams, arrives during the Great Migration to confront the limitations of "GM Crow." One of Esther's sons finds his political voice in the civil rights movement while another works at the ill-fated theme park AutoWorld. We watch the families brush elbows long before Gus and Monae ever meet, on one now-infamous night, when Keith Moon of The Who drives a Cadillac into the swimming pool of the Holiday Inn. A novel about the things that change over time and the things that don't, CHEVY IN THE HOLE is ultimately a love letter to Flint and the resilience of its people. Throughout, the city reverberates through these families and friendships, which remind us again and again what people need from one another and from the city they call home"--… (altro)

Fiction located in the city of Flint, Michigan. ( )

Had August Molloy not returned from the dead that morning in Detroit, the Molloy family line would've ended in the bathroom of a farm-to-table restaurant midway through lunch service.

And so opens this novel about August and how he moved back to Flint and met Monae at a small urban farm near the old General Motors plant. It's also a novel about earlier Molloys living in Flint during the sit-down strike in the thirties at that same plant and during the unrest of the sixties. These other storylines are given much less space than the one that follows August and Monae and despite this, much of the most interesting parts of their story happens between chapters. This is Kelsey Ronan's first novel and it shows. What is also evident is the author's real affection for Flint and her deep knowledge of local history, factors that make this book worth reading. ( )

This was an excellent debut novel from an author who clearly loves her hometown. It's unflinchingly Flint, not focusing on the hardships and tragedy that so many Flintstones experience, but not glossing over those experiences either. The historic scenes blended cinematically with the contemporary story, not quite fades, but connections on a theme. There was also an underlying perseverance between the various characters that embodies the city.

I only knocked it down to four stars because there were a few jumpy moments when I wasn't quite sure where the story was. ( )

I really loved this book - I did not really know much about Flint, Michigan outside of the news stories I've read. This book is really a love letter to Flint and expands the readers view of the town as a place that people have lived in and loved and not just the water crisis. ( )

Won an advanced reader's copy of Chevy in the Hole. Read but also listened to portions of the book.
I found the book interesting but a bit confusing with moving back and forth in time. It was also a bit slow/boring in my opinion. I was never really able to bond with any of the characters. ( )

He managed, "Well you look like a real rock and roller, flower."
His bones felt too heavy for his skin.
A name rose to Eamon's throat, so absurdly dripping with money he heard the silver clatter of coins in the syllables. In this doomed place, he thought, he could be anyone. No one cared.
She snatched up Goldie's elbow without breaking stride, steering them both calmly toward the door. Goldie let herself be led. She felt both weightless and awfully heavy, like a house lifting off its foundation.
What was the sin in that, to try to live right by your own nature? Didn't you owe yourself your own happiness first?
