A millionaire pretending to be a chauffeur to get out of a marriage pact, what could possibly go wrong?Eleanora "Nora" Atwood has never grocery shopped or taken public transportation, but to access her trust, she's required to live in the real world for three months-or marry. Nora has no interest in love, so a paper-only marriage is the obvious solution. And she knows the perfect groom-Anthony Carter, a fellow heir who owes her a huge favor.Fritz, rarely known as Anthony these days, takes advantage of his beard and Nora Atwood's cluelessness when she mistakes him for a chauffeur. The eccentric socialite thinks her plan to cash in her chip with Anthony and marry him is brilliant, but Fritz almost got trapped in a loveless marriage once before, and it's not going to happen again. Letting her think he's someone else seems harmless until she turns out to be his neighbor.Nora, a total fish out of water, suckers Fritz into helping her navigate her newfound independence, and he learns the hard way that opposites attract, but if he doesn't tell her his true identity before she stumbles on the truth, he'll risk losing her forever. If you like Meghan Quinn, L.J Shen, and Kendall Ryan, you'll love this sexy enemies-to-lovers contemporary romance! Anthony is a wealthy lawyer working in an unfulfilling job. His indifferent mother sends him a note from Brussels that her goddaughter, Nora, the delicate daughter of a family friend, will be working at the Carter family foundation for a few months. His mother expects him to take care of her. Nora mistakes Anthony for the Carter family chauffeur, Fritz, and on the ride from the airport, she explains that she plans to marry Anthony for his money. Anthony decides to let her continue to believe that he is a chauffeur.
The situation sounds like fun, but the author overreaches. Nora is depicted as so lacking in common life skills that she functions at the level of a cognitively impaired individual. It becomes more difficult to respect Anthony/Fritz when we learn he thinks Nora’s ineptitude is cute.
In any event, Nora begins to develop, she and Fritz soon hop into bed. For the next 100 plus pages, readers view every interaction between Fritz and Nora through the prism of raging hormones. One or two well-written sex scenes function as a pleasing spice. But the overuse of spice destroys the appeal of a dish, or in this case, the story. The book became tedious when the characters can’t even say hello without becoming aroused. The story would have been far more interesting if the relationship between Fritz and Nora developed through a series of entertaining events.
Then, of course, there is an event that pricks the smiley-faced balloon. Nora discovers that Fritz is Anthony. Angry at his deception, Nora leaves, cutting off all contact. The author depicts Nora as occupying the high ground, ignoring completely her reprehensible goal. Anthony did make a strategic mistake, but his decision to conceal his identity was motivated by Nora’s stated interest in gaining access to his money. The solution Fritz hits upon that leads to the “happy ever after” ending is implausible.
Building gradually and realistically to intimacy at this point would have created a much better story. This book was a disappointment. ( )
