It s 1968. A thirteen-year-old loner flees his abusive father and alcoholic mother for the lure of sunny California. He barely survives alone on the streets of Los Angeles, conversing with the ghost of his beloved dog and trying to avoid the police, until a fateful encounter leads him to the bohemian community of Venice Beach, known at the time as the Slum-by-the-Sea. He renames himself Moon, symbolizing his quest for something that will shine light on him, just as the sun illumines the moon. Over the next two years he struggles with first loves, confusion over his sexual identity, painful rejections, drug use, and haunting flashbacks from his childhood. As cultural upheaval over the Vietnam War rages, Moon assembles a new family of his own making, only to make a shocking and unexpected discovery that upends who he thought he was. Venice Beach is a moving tale of the resilience of youth and the importance of reflecting on our stories.… (altro)

I read this book in Oct 2021, I marked it as 4 out 5 stars, on both Goodreads & Librarything. I'm sorry I didn't write a synopsis of my feelings on the story. ( )

I'm not typically the target audience for stories of teenage boys coming of age, but Venice Beach is so beautifully written that its lush descriptions outweighed any need for me to identify with the main character. Then again, one could argue that the setting (the titular Venice Beach) is the true protagonist of the story. A truly engaging, and at times gut-wrenching, read. ( )

I received a copy of this book through LibraryThing’s Early Reviewers program, and I am grateful for the opportunity to read this book.

This was a compelling coming of age story—it managed to tell it without “feeling” young adult (and I don’t think it is young adult, despite the age of the narrator) which is not me trying to knock YA books, but there is definitely a vibe going on and some of the content is more adult.

Some of the pacing towards the end felt like it picked up so quickly, and I don’t love a time jump epilogue but I think the sort of cascading struggles that Moon faces really does a great job of sort of mirroring life in a really good interesting way. Definitely a compelling and interesting examination of identity development in so many ways. ( )

A wonderful book about the coming of age of a 13-year old runaway who renames himself Moon.
His father was abusive to mother and sons and killed the family dog. Moon runs away to California and spends some time homeless on the streets before getting picked up and taken to a temporary shelter. There he meets Renata, a therapist who helps him realize his own worth.

The story is engrossing. So much so that almost anything more about it would seem like a spoiler, The pace is perfect. The characters are fleshed out. The backstories are intriguing.

Overall, I would recommend this novel to anyone interested in good storytelling. ( )

Venice Beach is a coming of age story about a 13 year old kid who runs away from a bad family situation in Ohio and reinvents himself as Moon Morrison in Venice Beach, California. Moon meets a variety of people in his early days in California - some good, others not so good . While not an easy life, he is able to find his family of choice and begins to blaze his own trail. ( )
