"Taking joy in suffering is more human than we'd like to admit. The cruelty of the Trump administration's policies and the ritual rhetorical flaying of his targets are intimately connected. Shared cruelty and the delight it brings are critical moments of connection for white supremacists, a fact that is not new. Adam Serwer has been chronicling our political landscape for the last decade. He is one of the most resonant voices of our time, relentless in his pursuit of fact, unsentimental in his storytelling, yet deeply humane in his perspective. At The Atlantic, he has written about the Supreme Court's role in Jim Crow; the history of "white genocide" conspiracy theory; hoaxes; racism; inequality; and of course, Trump. But this collection isn't just about Trump--it's an investigation across centuries interrogating both this moment and its antecedents to reveal the deep roots that have given rise to Trumpism. New material includes four, audience-building essays that expand upon the collection's themes, and unearth more approaches to nationalism and pluralism. Like the polarizing effect Trump's administration has had on American Jews; tracing the emergence of police unions; and making the historical case for abolishing billionaires to preserve American democracy. Additionally, new introductions will provide context and insight into the impact of previously published pieces, why they garnered so much attention amongst media figures, politicians, and social platforms"--… (altro)

Adam Serwer is a great thinker and terrific writer. He is creative and provides insight regularly. This book is clear & concise about the cruelty, anger, vindictiveness & meanness of many aspects of Trumpism and the Trump Administration. ( )

This is an extremely important book on several levels most notable to the rise of white nationalism and current political deadlocks. The book is wii researched and uses multiple points in American history to bring to our current issues. ( )

The Cruelty Is the Point: The Past, Present, and Future of Trump's America
by Adam Serwer
I want to thank the publisher and NetGalley for letting me read this book.
This book has wonderful content but I was not thrilled with how the content was presented. It is essays and the essays have intros. But the content itself has everything we all have seen over the years. I am so Trump fatigued and I almost hated to read more about this hateful person.
The essays cover just about everything that Trump and the GOP like to abuse such as anything they consider less to them. That would be the poor, minorities, women, immigrants, LGBT, Democrats, and anyone they are against at the time.
They made policies that helped themselves and them only and cruel policies to hurt others. One of the worst was taking children from the parents of immigrants knowing they wouldn't likely be able to get the children back to the parents.
Policies to reduce school lunch free meals, A wink and a nod to police to rough up black protesters, and boosting the white power racists groups. Lies became the normal and corruption a means to their goal.
If you don't have Trump fatigue, A great book! ( )

This is a very good analysis of trump’s cruel and illegal policies of hatred toward various races and genders in the United States. It also gives a very good analysis of the effect of police unions and the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement. Unfortunately he seems to be only gently disapproving of antisemitism and accepts the political need for relationships with Farrakhan. ( )
