Playwright and novelist Nigel Williams's stage adaptation of William Golding's story was first professionally produced by the Royal Shakespeare Company at Stratford-upon-Avon in July 1995. 'Remarkably true to the novel in spirit . . . the theatre lends itself particularly well to the ritualistic aspects of the story - chanting, dancing, marching, forming a circle round the victim, stamping out a fire . . . You end up feeling you have seen a fable of infinite implications enacted in a little room.' Sunday Telegraph This special acting edition, particularly suitable for schools and amateur groups, contains the full playtext as well as notes on staging, a full properties list and lighting and sound cues.… (altro)

Nigel Williams' acting edition of Lord of the Flies is passable. It's not an exellent rendition, many things are missing, though that is understandable in cutting down a sizeable book into a play of reasonable length.
Unfortunately, in this rendition, many things were changed. We have, for example, the complete lack of the scene where Jack's hunters let the fire out. Simon and Maurice are given last names it is Ralph, not Jack that discovers the method of starting the fire, and Percival's mention of his name seems ridiculously out-of-place.
"Percival: we were sent because of the bombs, weren't we?
Ralph: Yes. now-
Percival: my name is Percival Wemys Madison..."
We also have smaller things, like Roger not being part of Jack's choir, and Simon being portrayed not as an innocent person, but as a weird person who delivers lines like, "I bet we came out of the sky. Years ago. I bet we came out of the sky and invaded this planet. I bet we did." The play also seemed to move too quickly. By the end of the first act, Jack and Ralph, who had been friends, are fighting. This isn't unlike the book, but in the play there is little to demonstrate the passage of time.
However, the most drastic changs is the way in which Piggy dies. In the original, Roger kills him by pushing a stone over the edge of Castle Rock, which then hit Piggy, et cetera. In Williams' rendition, though, Piggy is still killed by Roger, but instead of beng hit by a rock, Roger, taking advantage of the fact that Piggy can't see, leads him up the bluff, pretending to be Ralph, then throwing him off the cliff.
I suppose the rendition isn't terrible. Actually, putting aside the differences, it's not really too bad. I think some things work well, while some don't. ( )
