Maybe it's because I recently lost my dad (both MCs have lost a parent, one recently) - but I suspect it's because as her first book for a publishing house it's much longer than her usual - but I didn't enjoy this as much as the Wongs holiday books, the Baldwin Village series, and the Cider Bar Sisters series. A good read. It just didn't wow me. I received an ARC of this book to read through NetGalley. All opinions are my own. Donut Fall in Love is Jackie Lau's delightful new novel. I enjoyed it immensely as it has all the things that make reading her books such a happy experience, a meet-cute, fantastic food, the perfect amount of steam and wonderful supporting characters. Actor Ryan Kwok, famous for his abs, meets baker Lindsay Macleod when upon entering her bakery, he immediately crashes into her and sends a tray of specialty donuts flying. He's taking a break from movies to be closer to family after the recent death of his mother and the birth of his sister's first child. When his agent gets him a job on the show Baking Fail, he asks Lindsay to teach him how to bake so as not to appear as a disaster on the show. Their relationship grows to friendship and then something more, but neither of them are good at relationships and watching them learn and grow together was so heartening. I highly recommend this book; it is to me, perfect comfort reading. Steam Level: Medium. "A baker provides the sweetest escape for an actor in this charming romantic comedy. Actor Ryan Kwok is back in Toronto after the promotional tour for his latest film, a rom-com that is getting less-than-stellar reviews. After the sudden death of his mother and years of constant work, Ryan is taking some much-needed time off. But as he tries to be supportive to his family, he struggles with his loss and doesn't know how to talk to his dad-who now trolls him on Twitter instead of meeting him for dim sum. Innovative baker Lindsay McLeod meets Ryan when he knocks over two dozen specialty donuts at her bakery. Their relationship is off to a messy start, but there's no denying their immediate attraction. When Ryan signs up for a celebrity episode of Baking Fail, he asks Lindsay to teach him how to bake and she agrees. As Lindsay and Ryan spend time together, bonding over grief and bubble tea, it starts to feel like they're cooking up something sweeter than cupcakes in the kitchen"-- Non sono state trovate descrizioni di biblioteche |

Ryan Kwok is an actor who is taking a break after his latest movie, a romance, isn't performing as expected at the box office. He's moved home to Toronto and is grieving the recent loss of his mother, to whom he was incredibly close. He has a more strained relationship with his father, who has started trolling him on Twitter for all of the shirtless pictures Ryan has posted. Lindsay McLeod is a baker who makes absolutely delectable sounding donuts. Her best friend has just gotten married and left on her honeymoon, Lindsay's new roommate is not unfriendly exactly but definitely standoffish, and her mother brought a man she's just had a date with to Lindsay's bakery, a man who looks very much like Lindsay's late father. She's having a rather bad day when Ryan runs into her, literally, ruining two newly finished, full trays of her donut of the day, making her mood and her day even worse. Not the best first impression. Cut to Ryan's agent getting him a gig on a celebrity baking show, the one Ryan used to watch with his mom. In an effort to have a good showing, he hires Lindsay to teach him to bake. Things in the kitchen heat up a lot.
Both Ryan and Lindsay are nice characters and their relationship grows quickly from friendship to more. Neither of them have a lot of confidence in their ability to maintain a relationship though and that provides some of the tension here. Ryan is also worried about how his fame, and especially a decidedly mediocre movie, impacts other Asian American actors. Add to this his very fresh and real grief over the loss of his mother and he is carrying quite a heavy load. Lindsay appears to have her life together but, in fact, she's fairly lonely and having trouble with all of the life changes she has around her happening at once. Their insecurities in the relationship feel real and honest, especially for one where one partner is famous and famously attractive and the other is a regular person. Grief and the necessity of moving forward is well handled. The attraction between the Ryan and Lindsay is palpable and sex scenes are pretty steamy. And as for the donuts, well, prepare for your mouth to water a lot. The book is sweet and cute and a perfect read heading into Valentine's Day. ( )
