MacKayla Lane and Jericho Barrons return in the blockbuster Fever series from Karen Marie Moning.

Its easy to walk away from lies. Power is another thing.
/> MacKayla Lane would do anything to save the home she loves. A gifted sidhe-seer, shes already fought and defeated the deadly Sinsar Dubhan ancient book of terrible evilyet its hold on her has never been stronger.
When the wall that protected humans from the seductive, insatiable Fae was destroyed on Halloween, long-imprisoned immortals ravaged the planet. Now Dublin is a war zone with factions battling for control. As the city heats up and the ice left by the Hoar Frost King melts, tempers flare, passions run red-hot, and dangerous lines get crossed. Seelie and Unseelie vie for power against nine ancient immortals who have governed Dublin for millennia; a rival band of sidhe-seers invades the city, determined to claim it for their own; Macs former protg and best friend, Dani Mega OMalley, is now her fierce enemy; and even more urgent, Highland druid Christian MacKeltar has been captured by the Crimson Hag and is being driven deeper into Unseelie madness with each passing day. The only one Mac can depend on is the powerful, dangerous immortal Jericho Barrons, but even their fiery bond is tested by betrayal.
Its a world where staying alive is a constant struggle, the line between good and evil is blurred, and every alliance comes at a price. In an epic battle against dark forces, Mac must decide who she can trust, and what her survival is ultimately worth.

I'm not actually a super fan of the Fever series to begin with. I've always found Mac to verge on insufferable. But I read the books because the world Moning created is so interesting and the secondary characters (ahem, Barrons) to be intriguing. I thought that Iced was fun even though Dani was annoying. However, I was looking forward to what Moning would do with her. I'm disappointed that the focus shifted back to Mac.

Plus, again, I thought that so many viewpoints really diluted the strength of the story and added very little beyond page filler. Plus plus, I don't like some of the style choices. Everyone sounds very stiff and formal during their (endless) internal exposition. And I. Hate. One. Word. Sentences. And Ryodan's lack of inflection on questions (trying too hard to be cool is how it comes off to me).

It sounds like it, but I didn't hate it. I was glad to visit twisty-Dublin again and I will read the next book, but I also didn't love it.

Lastly, what is up with this totally wack cover? It doesn't match any of the original (pretty cool) covers and is a bland, totally uninspired PNR half-naked faceless dude. ( )

DELAYED TO 2015?!?!?!

Ok, authors of the world. If you put two years between the books in your series, you are going to lose readers. Sorry.

It's rare that I give a book 5 stars but this one deserved it.

A scalding hot sequel to the Fever series by Karen Marie Moning, Burned begins where Iced left off with Mac holding her spear to Dani’s neck. I’ve been waiting for like what seems forever for this book. I love this complex tale with all of the magic, intrigue and power and of course, the unbelievably hot sex and the sexual tension.

Iced was from the point of view of Dani “The Mega” O’Malley, a fourteen year old girl who has been through hell but is first and foremost a survivor. She is a sidhe-seer with the gift of super-speed. She loves Dublin and wants her city back the way it was without the dangerous Unseelie (Fae created by the Fae King that are, with the exception of royalty, misshapen, hideous creatures who feed off humans). Her point of view was fast-paced just like her and hilarious because of the way she sees the world and the way she butchers the English language. Mac discovered that Dani is the one who killed her sister, Alina, and now has her at the end of her spear.

Dani’s super speed or freeze-framing keeps giving out at odd moments and she doesn’t know why. It picks this moment to give out. Dani doesn’t have it in her to give up so she runs into the Silvers where she could be killed or lost forever.

This book is mostly the POV of Mac but also has the POV of, I think, six others; Dani, Christian, Lor, Kat and Jada, It gives a more indepth look into “The Nine” who are Barrons, Ryodan, Lor, Kasteo, Fade and four others who haven’t been named yet. They are immortals who were cursed long ago to live forever. They die and come back to life over and over again. They turn into beasts, at least Jericho Barrons and Ryodan do but only Mac knows this.
Mac is sexually frustrated the whole way through the book. Things keep happening and getting in the way of her and Barrons having sex and it just makes it worse that everyone else around her seems to be getting it on. She becomes invisible thanks to the Sinsar Dubh (an evil book created by the Unseelie king when he tried to expel all of his dark magic that he used while trying to re-create the Song of Making. It’s a part of Mac now. She tries to control it but sometimes, it controls her) saving her from being trapped by a spell that Jada and her gang of sidhe-seers were using. Mac uses her newfound invisibility to go spy on people. She learns a lot and also sees things that she probably could have lived without seeing EVER like Lor and Jo having sex.

Mac is less and less the “Rainbow Girl” she used to be but her POV is still sometime’s hilarious like how she calls the indents on the couch when she sits, while invisible, “petunia shaped”. Mac has a different outlook on life than a lot of people. When most people in Dublin were scrambling around looting for food and supplies after the destruction, Mac was at high priced department stores looting make-up and expensive clothing. She did stock up on toilet paper though.

I’m not sure there was a lot accomplished during this book except giving a lot of background and insight into people. In fact, it seemed like just more threats to human lives and the world keep sprouting up like the weird “black hole” globes that are at each site where the Hoar Frost King froze. They are getting bigger and whenever anyone goes too near them, they get sucked in and disappear. And now, there are Unseelie princesses who are just as powerful, if not more powerful, than the Unseelie princes.

How am I ever going to be able to wait for the next book? I want to read it NOW! This book was just that good! I can’t get enough.

After ICED I wasn't sure I wanted to continue with the series. The POV of a cocky 14 yr old being looked after (and lusted after?) by 3 grown men had left a sour taste in my mouth.

But I decided.....came this far let's see where this is going.

Glad I did. Now I know there are a lot of Dani fans out there and I appreciate your girl but let me say, so glad she wasn't THE major player here. Sure she plays one hell of a badass role in this book but oh my how times have changed. (I know we all bitched and complained about how immature Dani is but this new twist, still trying to decide if I like it or not. Though Ryodan seems to have no issue with the "new" Dani aka Jada)

Only hint I'll give out. Read this book if you: want a little more insight into Ryodan, like seeing Mac get the best of Barrons, find out there's another threat coming to destroy the world, the Unseelie King and his concubine have a brief visit.....oh...and what the heck is going on at the Abbey?!?! I also loved the fact that the MacKeltar's are back and we are talking about saving Christian (always did like him).

Overall I enjoyed the book and now am looking forward to the next one. As is her habit KMM left us a couple of cliff hangers....now I know to tamp down my need for quick answers and just go with the flow. (I have the next book in my hot little hands so that might be why I can stay calm right now...LOL)

Off to refill my coffee cup and crack open a (hopefully) good book. ( )
