Brief summary: The story is a murder mystery taking place within Chicago's Prohibition Era. A newer female detective is working on a serial murder case connected to the speakeasy nearby.
The story itself was a bit slower paced. The voices of the characters were almost overly formal (almost no contractions or natural-feeling dialogue), and at times it was difficult to tell what was meant to be an internal monologue and what was actual conversation. While some of the choice in writing tone was meant to convey class differences amongst the characters, it just felt awkward, making it hard to be a read to sink into. The author was clearly more comfortable writing the romantic interplay between various characters.
The work overall was a creditable effort but could benefit from some additional editing and proofreading. ( )
