"A twisty, whip-smart debut thriller, as electrifying as the #1 New York Times bestseller The Girl on the Train, about impending motherhood, unreliable friendship, and the high price of keeping secrets. Helen's idyllic life--handsome architect husband, gorgeous Victorian house, and cherished baby on the way (after years of trying)--begins to change the day she attends her first prenatal class and meets Rachel, an unpredictable single mother-to-be. Rachel doesn't seem very maternal: she smokes, drinks, and professes little interest in parenthood. Still, Helen is drawn to her. Maybe Rachel just needs a friend. And to be honest, Helen's a bit lonely herself. At least Rachel is fun to be with. She makes Helen laugh, invites her confidences, and distracts her from her fears. But her increasingly erratic behavior is unsettling. And Helen's not the only one who's noticed. Her friends and family begin to suspect that her strange new friend may be linked to their shared history in unexpected ways. When Rachel threatens to expose a past crime that could destroy all of their lives, it becomes clear that there are more than a few secrets laying beneath the broad-leaved trees and warm lamplight of Greenwich Park"--… (altro)

The psychological thriller is not my usual genre, but I seriously enjoyed this book. Hence the 5 stars, even though I felt the pacing could be a little better.
The story is told from 3 POVs, all female characters who happen to be long-time friends. The transitions between the characters are very smooth and easy to follow.
The story starts off rather simply. One of these narrators, Helen, meets a mysterious woman at her antenatal class. This woman will soon invite herself into Helen's life and things will escalate very quickly.
The story is very convoluted and honestly very difficult to predict, although some details were kind of easy to guess. This, however, didn't destroy the suspense.
None of the characters (except for Kate) are very likeable. However, that didn't prevent me from getting into the story which I finished within a day. The end was very satisfying. ( )

Main character is befriended at her first childbirth education class by Rachel. Rachel embeds herself into the life of Helen and friends. Very suspenseful. Since the author was a Brit, I didn't think it would be as engaging as it was. ( )

Written from three POVs, this twisty thriller is compelling right up to the unexpected end. Helen meets Rachel at a prenatal class. Friendly and a bit pushy, Rachel connives her way into Helen’s life. Little does Helen know how dangerous this will prove to be. Rachel is connected in a way to Helen’s past, with her family and friends. But Helen is not aware of this connection, and everyone else is keeping mum. But like most secrets, this truth has a way of coming out, unless someone is dead. And even then, secrets are hard to keep. This debut novel is well written and well paced, with things really picking up as the end draws near. The characters are well developed, and readers will have little trouble knowing who to trust, who to root for, and who deserves their comeuppance. I’ll be looking for more novels from this talented writer. ( )

This book is a suspenseful psychological thriller that slowly reverses the characters from victims to villains and back again. There are several surprise twists; however, some plots seem apparent from the beginning. Helen Thorp is the main character. She seems nice but quickly collapses into an indecisive, fearful worrier who can't seem to take a stand or have an interesting thought. Helen—and most of the other characters—are not very likable, with a few exceptions. The author did an excellent job weaving a complex tale of deception and betrayal throughout, then used the last few chapters to tie up loose ends. The very last sentence makes this book worth the time invested. ( )
