3.5 stars rounded up.

I have lukewarm feelings on this book.

On the one hand there were parts I *loved* and there were parts that weren't so great. Hitchcock gave a story much like Jen Turano's which threw me off a bit since it wasn't the same style but Hitchcock's own writing style. Both of which I enjoy, I just needed to get a feel for it and I found that I liked it a lot.

The story was hilarious and serious all at once with a competing romance and a dash of mystery. Readers of Gilded Age.

My biggest dislike would be that there were times the plot was somewhat iffy, like it would have been a novella and not a novel but the author and publisher lengthened it into a novel.

Warnings: 18 due to a villain and sexual content.

I voluntarily received and reviewed a complimentary e/copy of this book which I received from the author/publisher. All views expressed are only my honest opinion. ( )

"The Bachelorette" set in the late 19th Century.

Willow Dupre is a young woman who has a company to run with her father. She loves it, but the board doesn't love that she is a single woman. To appease the board, her parents come up with a plan to have a house party/competition with 30 of the most eligible wealthy bachelors in attendance. Willow must choose one of them to marry or else losing her family business to a ruthless competitor.

There were some fun elements to the story. Willow has to decide who is trying to undermine her business, selling information to the papers, and who actually appreciates her and not her fortune. It is a daunting task, and the gentlemen do not get along.

There were only a few of the gentlemen who play a significant role in the story. It is easy to tell from the beginning who the true competitors were. As a reader, you know that there is an investigation going on that Willow is unaware of. It's hard to cheer on the competitors when you are unsure if the person you are rooting for is worthy of her hand.

Overall this was a fun book to read. I felt that it lagged a bit in the middle, but the pacing picked up and kept me turning the pages.

My Dear Miss Dupre´ is something of a Gilded Age Bachelorette. Author Grace Hitchcock takes a modern idea and gives it a historical twist. While the premise sounded good, I just don’t think it came off on the page. I did like main character Willow Dupre´ and her marriage dilemma — find a husband to help her run her family’s business empire, since women of the day were seen as emotional and fit only to raise children. Turning those notions on their heads was a good thing, but I felt the way the suitor competition was carried out was a bit far-fetched. I found the various competitors endearing and annoying, just as I was supposed to. But the whole competition didn’t ring true to me. Not a fan of the modern-day TV version, I am probably not the target audience for this book anyway. 😉 Besides the romance, there is a bit of suspense as one character changes his mind on his motive for marrying Willow. Please note that reviews are very subjective and based on the reviewer’s likes and sometimes biases. My Dear Miss Dupre´ has 76% 4 and 5-star reviews, so I urge you to find out for yourself. I have enjoyed other books by Hitchcock, and my experience with this one will not keep me from picking up more books by her.

My Dear Miss Dupre by Grace Hitchcock is the first book in her American Royalty series. Willow Dupre has six months to choose a husband from the thirty suitors competing for her hand. Can she find true love and someone to help run her father’s sugar refinery within that time frame? If not, her cousin will sell his shares to the competition. This story started out with so much potential. Willow wanted what was best for the family business and was willing to go along with her parents’ wishes even though she wasn’t comfortable with the competition. There were things that the author put in the story that you know would have never happened in that time period; which kind of ruined the book for me. The story ended too fast and we were not part of the wrapping up of all the loose ends. They were just finished. We were told about them in a couple of sentences. All in all I don’t think the story lived up to the hype.

I received this book from the publisher for my honest review. ( )

The Husband Hunt!

Imagine, unbeknownst to you, your parents set up a competition with thirty eligible bachelors to win your hand in marriage. Willow Dupré is shocked to find out that is what her parents have done—and she must marry one of them in six months’ time. It is the bachelorette meets 1882 high society, with some crazy twists!

Unusual for a female at that time, Willow has helped her father run their profitable sugar company, with the idea she would be in charge someday. But his serious health condition is forcing him to retire in six months, and the board of directors refuses to work with a woman. If Willow doesn’t have a husband by then, they will lose the company.

How can she get to know any of them well enough to marry? She discovers some of the men in the competition are spies to get newspaper stories, others are there to destroy Willow and her family. Because of that, she finds herself in dangerous situations. How can she tell who is trustworthy?

Additionally, the stress of the competition causes some of the men to crack and behave badly. Others truly do love Willow, but she doesn’t feel the same, and is put in the position of breaking their hearts.

This was a good read, with lots of excitement, along with surprising danger and suspense. The author took the bachelorette subject, made it fresh, not predictable, and kept you wondering how it would turn out. It is a clean story with a Christian viewpoint. I recommend this 5-star book to those who enjoy romantic tales with a twist!
