Fiction. Mystery. Historical Fiction. In the wake of World War I, Jane Wunderly-a thoroughly modern young American widow-is traveling abroad, enjoying the hospitality of an English lord and a perfectly proper manor house, until murder makes an unwelcome appearance . . . England, 1926: Wedgefield Manor, deep in the tranquil Essex countryside, provides a welcome rest stop for Jane and her matchmaking Aunt Millie before their return to America. While Millie spends time with her long-lost daughter, Lillian, and their host, Lord Hughes, Jane fills the hours devouring mystery novels and taking flying lessons-much to Millie's disapproval. But any danger in the air is eclipsed by tragedy on the ground when one of the estate's mechanics, Air Force veteran Simon Marshall, is killed in a motorcar collision. The sliced brake cables prove this was no accident, yet was the intended victim someone other than Simon? The house is full of suspects-visiting relations, secretive servants, strangers prowling the grounds at night-and also full of targets. The enigmatic Mr. Redvers, who helped Jane solve a murder in Egypt, arrives on the scene to once more offer his assistance. It seems that everyone at Wedgefield wants Jane to help protect the Hughes family. But while she searches for answers, is she overlooking a killer hiding in plain sight?… (altro)

Book 2 in this Jane Wunderly series resonates with the Australian Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries. However, the busy-bodiness of Jane in a police investigation was so indiscreet and obnoxious, I could hardly be bothered to finish reading the story. The lack of sensible thinking completely derailed the story as Jane blundered through one episode to the next with faint regard for subtly or any hint of critical thinking. How Redvers, her paramour, tolerated such idiocy was beyond belief. As for an historical setting, the English-Country-House trope was rather good, though the actual mystery seemed terribly contrived. I enjoyed the fast pacing of the mystery and the conflict between characters was well done, pulling the reader into their world. The romantic tension between Jane and Redvers added an interesting zing to the plot. However, the first book in the series benefited by placing the characters out of their comfort zone, in Egypt, which I enjoyed rather more. This book, set amongst the gentry at a manor house, felt like it had less to offer in the way of surprises and fresh perspectives. It was a run-of-the-mill cozy murder mystery. Still quite readable! I look forward to the author's future endeavors.

Thanks to NetGalley and Kensington Books for this digital review copy! ( )

I enjoyed this, the second book in the Jane Wunderley series, more than the first. It takes place in 1926 England at a country manor house where murder, intrigue and romance abound! My only criticism is the ending was too dramatic. There were a few loose ends and I suspect they will be closed in the following book in the series. ( )

Murder at Wedgefield Manor is the second book in the series. I requested Murder at Mena House from my library and they sent this one. I stayed at the Mena House in January so interested in the book. I did not have a problem reading this book first.
Jane Wunderly is an American widow and she and her aunt, Millie, are staying at Wedgefield Manor which is owned by Lord Hughes. Also there is Millie's daughter, Lillian, and more to this story.
An Air Force veteran, Simon, is killed because someone cut the brakes on his car.
The book continues with the finding of the killer, police are involved, secrets revealed and Jane also has a love interest.
The book had many small details so the reader could picture what was happening. Jane eating her sandwich was one as well as the charecters and their facial expressions.
It is my first read by Erica Ruth Neubauer. I am very impressed that she was in the military for eleven years, a Maryland police officer, and an English teacher.
I gave it a 5*. ( )

Jane Wunderly and her aunt Millie are visiting the country estate of Lord Hughes. When an employee dies in an automobile, it is discovered the break line was severed. Jane can't resist the chance to assist in the investigation, and the unexpected appearance of Mr. Redvers to deliver the news of the crash gives her the perfect partner once again. While I enjoyed this and loved the way her flying lessons were put to use, this installment was not quite as strong as the previous one. One reason for this was the over-treatment of a relationship between two female characters which made it feel like the real agenda of the book was to promote LGBTQIA relationships rather than solving the mystery itself. I listened to the audiobook narrated by Sarah Zimmerman. ( )
