"After artist Claire Beaudry Chase is attacked and left for dead in her home on the Connecticut coast, she doesn't know who she can trust. But her well-connected husband, Griffin--who is running for governor--is her prime suspect. Just before the attack, Claire was preparing for an exhibit of her shadow boxes, one of which clearly accuses Griffin of a violent crime committed twenty-five years ago. If the public were to find out who her husband is, his political career would be over. Claire's certain her husband and his powerful supporters would kill her to stop the truth from getting out. When one of Claire's acquaintances is murdered, the authorities suspect the homicide is linked to the attack on Claire. As the dual investigations unfold, Claire must decide how much she's willing to lose to take down her husband and the corrupt group of elites who will do anything to protect Griffin's interests and their own."--Provided by publisher.… (altro)

I have been a fan of Luanne Rice for two decades and her latest offering did not let me down: it was a page turner. I loved the way the characters took shape as the story unfolded, not in neat chronological fashion, but in bits and pieces, giving them so much dimension. The narrative filaments of this complex plot wove in and out—largely through the device of moving forward and back in time from chapter to chapter—pulling in tighter until the mystery wrapped up tightly. And, as usual, Ms. Rice is masterful at capturing a sense of place—the old New England fishing villages on the Long Island Sound. In addition to the riveting story, the treatment of domestic abuse was well-laid out. Two lines will stay with me:

“Abusers are weak. They trap women who have gigantic hearts, who want to help these poor, sad wounded birds.”

This is an excellent book with a strong female character and well written. It show the ugly side of wealth, power, and politics. Luanne Rice is an excellent writer and I have enjoyed many of her books. ( )

I haven't read one of Rice's books since 2008 ---what have I missed??? I really enjoyed this thriller sort of book---lots of twists and turns. The power of money and greed, as usual, can be manipulated in enormous numbers of story variations and this one had a likable main character in the form of Claire. One can hope that the "good guys" can win in real life situations that make the news these days, too! As usual, life is often more incredible than what happens in a book. ( )

This was my first novel by Luanne Rice and it definitely will not be the last.

Wow.

An amazing thriller about abused women, abusive men (and women), the healing powers of nature, and justice.

The Connecticut Shoreline glimmers and shines. This, along with the aforementioned JUSTICE, smooth writing, and story elements "ripped from the headlines," made this a five-star read for me. ( )

After artist Claire Beaudry Chase is attacked and left for dead in her home on the Connecticut coast, she doesn’t know who she can trust. But her well-connected husband, Griffin - who is running for governor - is her prime suspect.

Just before the attack, Claire was preparing for an exhibit of her shadow boxes, one of which clearly accuses Griffin of a violent crime committed 25 years ago. If the public were to find out who her husband is, his political career would be over. Claire’s certain her husband and his powerful supporters would kill her to stop the truth from getting out.

When one of Claire’s acquaintances is murdered, the authorities suspect the homicide is linked to the attack on Claire. As the dual investigations unfold, Claire must decide how much she’s willing to lose to take down her husband and the corrupt group of elites who will do anything to protect Griffin’s interests and their own.
