Five Against the World From the emptiness of the room a rich resonant voice spoke -- an alien voice from an alien planet: "You five earth people have in your hands the power of life and death. Each capsule you hold can destroy a continent. This weapon will be lent to you for a period of 27 earthly days. If by the end of this time you have not used it, it will become harmless. Our records of your racial history show that there is a better than 50 per cent possibility of this weapon's being used within the 27 days -- but in the end it will be your choice." THE 27TH DAY is the incredible story of five ordinary human beings who were abducted into the unknown and returned to earth with the power to destroy it. It is a frightening and prophetic novel of the not-too-distant future. John Mantley (1920-2003) was a Canadian theatrical actor, writer, director, screenwriter and producer, known for the long-running television series Gunsmoke (1955), How the West Was Won (1976) and Dirty Sally (1974). During World War II, he flew fighter planes for the Royal Canadian Air Force. And he was Mary Pickford's cousin.… (altro)

The 27th Day is a classic 1950s science fiction novel written with distinct cold war influences.

Set in the late 1950s, aliens abduct five humans and provide each of them with a box, only they can open, which contains 3 golden capsules which can be used to exterminate humanity. They're told that they have 27 days in which to choose to use them, or not use them, and if at the end of that period more than 1/3 of humanity remains they will not colonise Earth. The aliens however are confident that humanity will wipe out more than 2/3rds of itself.

This was an enjoyable read, the distinct picture is painted as America essentially being the beacon of world hope, and Russia being a beacon of evil with a population brainwashed by its leaders. The Russia leader is referred to as Great Leader, which is a little amusing consider that is what North Korea's dictator likes to refer to himself as. At any rate, despite the distinct cold war background to the story, it's quite the romp.

Fans of 1950s science fiction would enjoy. ( )

A great idea, not particularly well written. This story is one of those rare cases where the film was better. ( )

As far as it could be ascertained from later enquiries, the first person to hear an extra-terrestrial voice on earth was Jonathan Clark.
