Matthew's theology of the spirit has received little scholarly attention, which is regrettable since the evangelist is careful to note that the eschatological redemption described in his gospel is the direct result of the activity of God's Spirit. Matthew's narrative of God's restoring work, which begins with Jesus and continues through his followers, is both informed by and extends the larger biblical narrative of God's creative, redemptive and restoring work, at the centre of which stands his Spirit, his active presence. Charette's study elaborates on the broad sweep of Matthew's interest in the Spirit and examines the operation of the Spirit in relation to the three theological categories of Christology, soteriology and ecclesiology. The author discusses the Spirit in Matthew in 3 sections:
Section 1: The Spirit's role in the person and ministry of Jesus Christ as Messiah according to OT prophetic expectations.
Section 2: The Spirit's role in Jesus redemptive work as Messiah in forgiving sins and judgment.
Section 3: The Spirit's work of continuity between Israel and the Church as Covenant communities.
Although a heavy subject to squeeze in 146 pages, he does so expertly, concisely, and clearly. You will be meditating on for a while on the insights he packs into these few pages and it will have you reading the Gospel of Matthew in a new way as you discern the work of the Spirit in each of its 28 chapters.
Another good thing about this book is that he not only provides a bibliography for further reading but has an index of Scripture verses cited in the book. ( )
