If you enjoy reading about the Civil War, you are going to love this story! This is an easy-to-read book that is packed with tons of history lessons. The story is told by Jonathan Vander, a gentleman from New England. Through his trials and tribulations in Charleston during the civil war his journey will keep you turning pages at a rapid pace.

After living in South Carolina for 30 years and having visited Charleston several times, I loved reading this story and being able to imagine and feel like I was actually there through this historical period. The author George WB Scott has done an incredible job putting together this wonderful story about the Civil War on and off the battlefield.

I would highly recommend this book to history buffs and anyone looking for a good ole Southern story! ( )

This is a beautifully written book that is destined to be a classic. The author obviously did a huge amount of research about Charleston in the 1860s, the Civil War and it's effect on the civilization of the South. Not merely the plantations whose slaves were freed by the Emancipation Proclamation, but the entire way of life for Southern people at that time was very significantly changed. The Civil War itself devastated the country and the author did a wonderful job of illustrating Charleston before, during and after the war. The characterization in the novel is magnificent, and I can't emphasize that fact enough. The descriptions of the surroundings were so detailed that this reader was transported to every place. Every tiny event was so amazingly written, every emotion wrung out on the page. I don't read many books that I want to slow down so as not to finish too quickly nor do I give many books such lavish praise. This is a masterful novel and astonishing for a first novel. I dearly hope Mr. Scott will continue to write. I can't wait to see what he will craft next.
I received an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Thank you to the author and publisher. ( )

Masterful storytelling! I so much enjoyed reading this book and did not want it to end, although I was inpatient with wanting to know the ending. The thorough descriptions and character development were superb. Excellent writing! Highly recommend!

I was an early reviewer of I Jonathan and fell in love instantly with the main character, feeling his struggles and heart breaks, as well as his triumphs and wins. This book was so well thought out and written, thank you for writing such a page turner! If you enjoy historical fiction that has a little bit of everything (love, action, and a tad bit of magic mixed in), I highly recommend this book! ( )

I was given a copy of this book "I Jonathan, A Charleston Tale of the Rebellion" by the author, George W.B. Scott. Thank you, it was a pleasure to read. It is hard to believe this is his first novel. It was well researched and written. His characters felt real. You could feel their emotions. The descriptions were realistic and carried you to the places in his book. He incorporated a lot of historical relevance of the time and place into the story, which made it very interesting.

If you are a fan of historical fiction and especially Civil War era, this book is a MUST READ. ( )
