The Snake rules, awesome book about an awesome man!Questa recensione è stata scritta per Recensori in anteprima di LibraryThing. I only have a casual interest in drag racing today but remember well "The Snake" during his heyday. Good read about early drag racing and its many characters. I would have liked reading more about the cars, engines and set-ups but this a biography. Not much is covered about personal and family issues since it's really a recap of his successful dominance of the sport. I was fortunate enough to receive a printed copy and could enjoy a number of photos of a past time. Questa recensione è stata scritta per Recensori in anteprima di LibraryThing. Very informative! Questa recensione è stata scritta per Recensori in anteprima di LibraryThing. This book was a delight to read and was insightful about his life. While not a book full stats and other information this is his story on his terms. There are plenty of pictures of Prudhomme's career through the years and the many cars he drove. Not my kind of racing but a good book. The book is a combination biography and photo book that can be easily scanned, flipped through and read by page to follow the snippets of Prudhomme's career and the evolution of drag racing across several decades. The personal details do not delve intimately about family, friends and failures but provide enough perspective to appreciate how to juggle a passion with a life shared with others. Prudhomme was successful at both but not without stumbles and regrets, like many. Still, he's a great representative and promoter of the sport. I still have my Hot Wheels cars from the Snake and Mongoose series back in the day and watch local races and occasionally national meets. I'd have liked some more tech details, especially as engines, set-ups and driving styles changed, improved and adapted, but Prudhomme managed an acceptable balance. Scherr's voice comes through solidly and tempers and structures and book as a professional can offer. I've read a lot of sport personality bios. All of these characters are so narrowly focused on their sport that you miss the other side of their other life, if such exists, and their times. More of those aspects would warrant 5-stars though it's a good read if only sitting down with a beer and flipping through the pages. nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione
Don "The Snake" Prudhomme reveals for the first time ever his incredible life and career on and off of the drag strip. Imagine spending a year with Don "The Snake" Prudhomme, having coffee together and talking about his life, his racing, his friends, and his family. He'd tell you about how he rose from being a high school drop-out who was painting cars to a respected Top Fuel dragster driver and successful businessman. You'd hear how he toured the country with Tommy Ivo and "The Hawaiian" Roland Leong, racing all the legends from "Big Daddy" Don Garlits to "The Golden Greek" [Chris] Karamesines. He'd say how he met Tom McEwen and recall how they became the Snake and the Mongoose, leading to a career in Funny Cars that netted him four championships in a row. He'd talk about the thrill of first wins and owning his own teams but also the struggles of bad seasons, crashes and fires, broken parts, and broken contracts. Along the way, he'd speak about the people in his life, such as engine-builder Keith Black and NHRA president Wally Parks, and those who were killed in the wild and unpredictable sport of nitro racing. It wouldn't be only racing, though. Prudhomme would share lessons he learned about business and life from such varied sources as a neighbor in Granada Hills to Ford GT40 driver Dan Gurney. He also would talk about the importance of family: how his wife, Lynn, and daughter, Donna, changed his world and how finding out about his African-American roots opened his eyes to a culture and inheritance he'd always wanted. This is the experience you'll get in Don "The Snake" Prudhomme: My Life Beyond the 1320. Non sono state trovate descrizioni di biblioteche |
