Greene digs deeps - more like tries to strip bare - Catholicism in this one as if he is trying to find a shard of, I don't know, truth that may make sense of the suffering some pay all in the name of religion. This one is said to be somewhat autobiographical in nature and if that is correct, than I can understand the strong emotions that Greene throws into his writing. Just, wow. London in the 1950s. A mysterious house, home to a family that has seen better days, will not yield its secrets. And a love affair turns to tragedy. Greene, one of the foremost writers of the 20th century, based the play on his own passionate but doomed affairs, and his conflicted view of Catholicism.
