A child and his grandmother go on holiday and discover a plot by the witches of England to exterminate all the country's children.

I've never read the original The Witches so I don't know if this is a faithful adaptation or not. I do know that it seemed to end while there was more story to tell. I also didn't super care for the very cartoonish illustration style. I did find the relationship between grandmother and grandson to be quite sweet, and Grandmamma was often quite funny.

There's lots of truly scary ideas for children in this book including loss of parents, loss of friends, loss of limb, and so on. I get it's meant to be horror for kids but it definitely might be too much for some kids.

All in all, my expectations for this book were higher than what I actually experienced in reading it. ( )

Entertaining, though it would've been too bloody/creepy for me as a kid. The grandmother is quite a character. ( )

This graphic novel adaptation of The Witches makes some changes - it begins with the boy reading a comic book during his parents' wake; he has dark skin; Bruno is a girl - but overall it is faithful to the original, and the witches, especially the Grand High Witch, are suitably scary. ( )

Just as traumatizing as the original book (at least for me)... ( )
