Fiction. Mystery. Suspense. Thriller. HTML:The Attorney, which marked the return of Steve Martini's lawyer-sleuth Paul Madriani, was hailed for its "well-observed courtroom maneuverings" (The Christian Science Monitor) and "crisp dialogue and tart observations" (Publishers Weekly). Now Martini delivers the most daunting capital case of Madriani's career.
Paul Madriani has ample reason to suspect he's representing a guilty man. Dr. David Crone, a respected medical researcher and principal in mapping the human genome, is charged with the murder of a young colleague: twenty-six-year-old Kalista Jordan, an African-American research physician whose body washed up on a beach in San Diego Bay. Forensic evidence links her murder with material in Crone's garage. Crone had both opportunity and motive: Kalista had recently ended their affair, and may have been deserting him professionally as well, moving on to a rival genetic research facility. However, when a key witness for the prosecution dies unexpectedly, leaving an incriminating note behind, Crone's innocence seems confirmed-until Madriani hits upon a potentially damning loose end.

A fairly interesting legal murder mystery in which the protagonist, Paul Madriani, must defend a client unwilling to help himself and whom Paul suspects may be guilty. But all is not as it seems…

It would have earned a solid “3” but for two weaknesses. The author does a fine job of “showing, not telling,” but much of the “showing,” particularly in the early portions of the book, are through the means of courtroom dialogue between lawyers and witnesses, lawyers and each other, and lawyers and judges. This makes the book somewhat plodding as the author weaves the picture for the reader through what seems only an overly long trial transcript.

Also, the title. The jury does not factor into the story and no part of the story addresses or hangs on what the jury does or does not do. I kept waiting for some jury intrigue that never came. It’s a very odd choice of title. ( )

Finished it on my second attempt. I don't remember why I couldn't complete it previously as this is quite a readable book. Well-written court scenes. Just that it is quite a puzzle why Martini titled it "The Jury" since the jury is almost non-existent in the book. ( )

A perfectly serviceable courtroom thriller but nothing memorable. ( )

Paul Madriani and his partner, Harry Hinds, are defending a brilliant research doctor who won't tell them anything about what he is working on saying it is confidential. He is accused of killing one of the researchers he supervised who was obviously trying to undermine him and get his job and his research money. Madriani and HInds are stymied by a client who isn't very cooperative. They only got into it because of the family of one of his daughter's friends who have a child dying of Huntington's chorea. The client is heading a research project into this disease but it is made up of adults. The chlld's family asks for Madriani's help because they are afraid the project will be shut down and they are trying to get their child in as the child's only chance. Just as they are beginning to think their client is guilty, a key witness dies - an apparent suicide. The prosecutor's office is going to have to dismiss. Madriani and Hinds finally figure it out that the child's father cracked under the pressure and blamed both victims for his daughter not getting into the project and was responsible for the murders. They stop him from killing anyone else - he jumps off a cliff and they never reveal what they know. The child dies and her mother inherits from a life insurance policy held by the father for several years.

Offend people at a cocktail party, and they'll give you a dirty look and walk away. Offend people on a jury and they may lock you away for the rest of your life, or worse.
