Sad, tragic, and horrifying, this book illuminates the limits of well-meaning (in their eyes) liberal do-gooders in South Africa, and in Africa more generally. It isn't enough to simply offer financial support. One should also demonstrate a level of caring for the PERSON involved, something Mabel Palmer never does, nor shows she is capable of doing. Lily Moya is instead simply an "experimental doll" which Mabel "plays" with as it suits her.

However, I felt that there were too many inconsequential letters here: many are included that do not seem to move the narrative forward at all, i.e. the many letters to school administrators. ( )
