Unlike the Disney tale of Pocahontas, the true story of her legend greatly differs. This biography gives one a closer look of America's history and the famous Indian hero, Pocahontas, who's bravery saved many English settler's lives. Pocahontas first saved John Smith's life and convinced the chief to befriend Smith. Although, they befriended Smith, they struggled with trading goods and the friendship did not last. The English eventually have to kid-napp Pocahontas so that her father return the English prisoners and other items he stole. Pocahontas's dad refused to give up the items. This hurt Pocahontas, so she stayed with the English men in a new town of Henrico. Pocahontas learned the Christian religion and the English men's ways. She eventually married Rolfe, not John Smith, and had child with him. When they visited England, Pocahontas became extremely ill and died. I enjoyed this book because not only did I receive an interesting history lesson about the early settlements in America but I am also more informed about the great Native American Princess, Pocahontas! This story of Pocahontas captures her life and significance in straightforward narrative and is a perfect biographical source to introduce to early grades. The account of what we have come to know of Pocahontas is mostly told from John Smith who was an English Colonist. The books by Smith is the primary source, although it may not be a reliable source. For example, John Smith was quoted as saying that Pocahontas had rescued him in 1624 when in fact she was not living at that time. Although Smith's account may be somewhat questionable, he did have a great respect for the Powhatan Princess. She is portrayed as a person of great courage and as a promoter of peace. She and her father's compassion for other humans was the main reason for peaceful relations with the settlers. Once they died, relations between the Powhatan and English settlers declined which caused significant death amongst both groups of people. ( )

This is a chapter book about the life of Pocahontas. Pocahontas was a young brave women who saved the life of an English colonist named Captain John Smith. This story tells about her life and the many contributions she did. This book also tells you many interested facts about Pocahontes that one might not know. ( )

One of first questions about biographical books about Pocahontas is how much of her life story is legend and how much is indeed based on facts from primary source materials. Pocahontas has always been portrayed as a strong woman notable for her heroic act of saving Captain John Smith from his death—a legendary romantic drama. Illustrations of Pocahontas differ due to artist interpretation and her legendary beauty is not always depicted.

The book gave a brief overview of Pocahontas’s life. There was too much information on the colonists and the building of the Virginia colony. The photographs and artists’ renderings helped to put faces to people and visual images of places. The legend of Pocahontas has importance in American history. It not only tells about the life of Pocahontas, it includes information about the first colonists from England, the founding of Jamestown, and relationships between the colonists and the Native Americans. The books provides a bibliography with primary and secondary sources, a timeline of Pocahontas’s life, further readings, an excellent index, and photograph credits.
