Le moins que l'on puisse dire c'est que c'est assez... percutant. ( )

Dans les remerciements de son roman, l'auteur précise qu'il a écrit un Pulp. Ce genre littéraire qui tient son nom des magazines bon marché dans lesquels ils étaient publiés jusqu'au milieu du XXème siècle se caractérise par le côté "grand guignolesque" des textes publiés. Le niveau de crédibilité de l'histoire est proche du zéro, mais la narration nous tient en haleine par la multiplication des scènes sanglantes.
C'est exactement sur ce ressort qu'est construit La chasse. Le quotidien de Franck, gérant d'une station service dans un trou-du-cul du monde comme il semble y en avoir beaucoup en Australie, se voit bouleversé par l'arrivée de Maggie... et des "sauvages" qui la poursuivent... pas vraiment pour lui offrir des fleurs.
Dés lors, on comprend que l'argument principal du livre va être de savoir comment quatre adultes et une enfant vont pouvoir échapper à une horde de sauvages dont le principal loisir est... la chasse à l'homme dans le bush australien.
Inutile de vous dire que dans ce type de roman, l'identification au héros est impossible. Personnellement, je serais mort dés le second chapitre...
Alors, pourquoi aimer ce type de littérature ? Surement pour les mêmes raisons qui font qu'on aime les films d'action du genre Dye hard. Parce qu'on sait que ça n'est pas crédible, parce qu'on aime l'hémoglobine, parce qu'on sait qu'à la fin le héros triomphe toujours.
Un petit plus pour ce roman, la narration qui nous renvoie au passé des personnages. ( )

The Hunted by Gabriel Bergmoser was not what I was expecting. Less a thriller than horror novel in my opinion, I’m a little lost for words.

After a blood-soaked young woman stumbles from a car into a remote, outback roadhouse, owner Frank, his teenage granddaughter, Allie, and a handful of unlucky customers are caught up in a horrifying night of violence not all of them will survive.

Unfolding from several perspectives over two timelines that eventually meet, The Hunted is fast paced, action packed and suspenseful. My first instinct is to describe it as a cross between the films Wolf Creek (2005) and Deliverance (1972), and I think this would do well if adapted to the screen.

But had I been aware of the explicit incidences of torture and violence that occur in this novel, I wouldn’t have chosen to read it. At least twice I was uncomfortable enough to consider not finishing it, but to be fair to Bergmoser I was equally uncomfortable not doing so... I needed to know how it would end for the characters, particularly Frank, Allie and the story’s anti-hero, Maggie.

It wouldn’t be accurate to say I liked The Hunted, but that’s a matter of genre rather than any particular flaws with the book. If horror is your thing, I think you’ll love it. ( )
