"Definition of Finna, created by the author: fin na /'fine/ contraction: (1) going to ; intending to. rooted in African American Vernacular English. (2) eye dialect spelling of "fixing to." (3) Black possibility ; Black futurity; Blackness as tomorrow. A lyrical and harp celebration, these poems consider the brevity and disposability of Black lives and other oppressed people in our current era of emboldened white supremacy. I picked this up because I kept recommending Finna by Nino Capri to everyone on their "rec me 12 books for 2022' memes and it reminded me I had the OTHER Finna on my shelves and hadn't read it yet. This was a joyful exploration of language and identity and Black culture and Chicago and I loved dipping in and out of it as I was reading other things. ( )

Not going to give this book a rating because I just don’t know enough about poetry. I didn’t love it, but I kinda liked it, and I can see the author is talented. I got this book from the library because I heard an interview with Nate Marshall on NPR and he sounded like an interesting guy.
