A one-volume edition, this history of Washington was originally published in two parts. Washington: Village and Capital, 1800-1878 was awarded the 1963 Pulitzer Prize for History. Originally published in 1977. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. 2567 Washington: Village and Capital, 1800-1878, by Constance McLaughlin Green (read 13 Jan 1994) (Pulitzer History prize in 1963) While I lived in Washington in my law school days, that is a while ago and this book did not hold my interest too well. Washington was a squalid place for much of the period covered by this book, and the book paid only passing attention to the political scene--which has always been what interested me most about Washington.
