Perfect for 6th graders looking for something spooky but not too scary. It moved fast without sacrificing any plot or character development. ( )

I really liked this one. It was like if Neil Gaiman wrote We Have Always Lived in the Castle with a bit of old fairy tale magic. I did find myself wishing for something more to the narrative, but it was very fun to read anyway.. ( )

This was a very sweet, quick read. The story had a pretty fast pace, which at times I didn't care for, but it held my attention easily. Some things felt like they were moving too quickly, particularly the main plot-line. A plot twist or new conflict would be introduced and resolved almost immediately.

Even with the frequency and quickness of the plot twists, some of them were pretty unexpected. I found myself fairly shocked by a few of them. I can honestly say that many of the revelations were never even a possibility I thought of.

We don't see much from the parents, so I'm not sure how I should feel about them. I do think their changed feelings toward Mayhap in the end were rather sudden with little to no thought behind the change of heart. As for the sisters, I couldn't really connect with any of them until the very end, but I still loved them. Their bond was wholesome and strong, which I admired.

I loved the magical aspect of this book. It was pretty complex for a middle grade novel, at least comparing it to the novels I read when I was younger. I think it would be very interesting to read about a magical system similar to this one in more of a young adult style. The droonhounds were probably my favorite part of the magic.

This really was such a cute book. I found the family theme to be very wholesome and sweet. I loved the relationship between the girls, as well as their connection to the house. It was simple, but it was still poetic.

Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this book via the publisher and JeanBookNerd tours. This did not influence my opinion in any way. ( )

Sisters Winnow, Mayhap, and Pavonine have always lived in Straygarden Place, ever since their parents disappeared into the tall silver grass leaving only a note telling them not to leave under any circumstances. The house provides for their every need, and when they need to sleep, they brush their loyal droomhunds and drift off. But one day, Mayhap finds that Winnow has gone, and the front door is open -- and she knows that Winnow has left the house, and she is in danger.

I wanted to love this -- the imagery and writing were delightful. There were moments where I was totally spooked; Mayhap's feeling of being helpless and at the mercy of the house was very powerful. I loved the concept of the droomhunds. At the same time, I had a lot of questions and most of them weren't really answered, and I was pretty unsatisfied by the ending. Maybe I just wanted to know too much, I don't know, but it just wasn't a fulfilling read for me. ( )

The writing is mellifluous, even when it has a dark Gothic bent to it, even when it is angry, but when It is soft, caring, and compassionate, it is absolutely heartbreaking.

In this otherworldly tale, three sisters are left to fend for themselves Their parent have departed but they know not why. Straygarden Place Mansion has been given the role of caretaker and protector of the girls. The sisters only have to ask, and the mansion provides. Their parents parting words are “Do not leave the house. Do not go into the grass. Wait for us.” But when you are fourteen and tired of waiting, curious and suspect something is not as it should be all the “Do Nots” in the world are just words to be ignored.

The eldest, Winnow goes missing, she returns from the grass changed and extremely ill. Middle sister Mayhap tries to take charge but is meeting challenges that are perplexing and without apparent answers or solutions. She has many questions but must take care not to further alarm the youngest sister, Pavonine. The sisters navigate the ups and downs of Willow’s illness until the unthinkable happens.

Mayhap is to learn for them all that for every wish granted there is a cost to be paid. “The cost of light is darkness. And the cost of magic is loneliness.” At the end of every lonely road travelled, with all our longing, all we ever really want is to be together as family.

Hayley Chewins has written an interesting and thought-provoking bit of enchantment. Thank you LibraryThing for a copy. ( )
