"Poems, paintings and Paris all come to life in this enchanting picture book biography of Gertrude Stein. This story of imagination and expression introduces young readers to Gertrude and her life partner, Alice B. Toklas, who lived in Paris during a fascinating time in history. Divided into short chapters that chronicle different episodes in Gertrude and Alice's life, this book celebrates two women who were full of daring and creativity at a time when women were encouraged to be wives, not writers. Author Evie Robillard's playful second-person free verse and illustrator Rachel Katstaller's charmingly detailed art beautifully capture the lively world of early 20th-century Paris. Young readers will learn about how Gertrude made up her own writing rules. They'll even learn how sitting around "doing nothing, really doing nothing" is a very important part of being a genius! Gertrude's ingenuity and the childlike joy she found in words and ideas are showcased by the inclusion of quotations from her work. Backmatter includes a timeline, resources and an author's note for further learning."--… (altro)

A unique styled biography about the life of Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas in free verse. Gertrude Stein lived in Paris during the 20th century. She lived with Alice who acted as an editor, cooked, and veterinarian for their beloved dog. Gertrude and Alice loved art and had an expansive collection. They would often show their painting to people who they found interesting. One artist they like was Pablo Picasso. Picasso's even painted a portrait of Gertrude. However, what was interesting is that this painting that he worked months on he scrapped because he could no longer see her when he looked a the painting. It was sad in the end when the family came and took the paintings "for safekeeping."
Woven into the poems are quotes from Gertrude Steins writings. ( )

A fascinating and offbeat book for youngsters. It blends great illustrations with art history, personal quotes from Gertrude and a running description of the life she began with her brother Leo and what happened after she and Alice met and became a couple. It's delightful and low key, perfect for youngsters who are curious and have a great imagination ( )
